The Digital High Street Parking Forum: Parking & the Digital High Street 1st June 2017 Kieran Fitsall Head of Service Improvement & Transformation

Re-imagining the UK High Street

The Digital High Street Modern customers expect more from retailers – and they’re falling behind Digital experience not matched in store Shopping habits are changing Source: Monotype Brand Perfect Initiative: Adventures in Retail 2012

The Digital High Street The High Street has to evolve Future proof with digital technology 7 factors for a successful High Street: “Think of customer journeys as an integrated series of physical and digital interactions” Economically strong Convenient Engaging Relevant Adaptive Authentic & Diverse Experiential Source: Future High Streets Forum: The Digital High Street Report 2020

What does this mean for ‘Parking’? The role of ‘parking’ in our towns and cities – do we want to be encouraging people to drive? Think about the impact of congestion – discourage polluting vehicles Provide choice – inform travel behaviours Make it easier for people to get from A to B – reduce circling time Connected technologies – what does this mean for ‘parking’?

The Westminster Connected Parking Project Funded by DfT to build on Westminster investment Collaborative working with providers Make most of existing data from sensors Explore other sensor technology Integrate payment with parking spaces into vehicle and app Use Big Data to improve operations and inform policy making Make parking easier DfT want lessons learned to be spread to other UK LAs Blueprint, setting the standard National relevance for future initiatives

Sensors In ground – 3,500 deployed in Westminster Tailor to environment Vehicles and statistics can be “sensors” too Support Mobility as a Service Assist autonomous vehicles Taxi bay sensors from Clever Citi being installed

Optical sensors Tell drivers where there is already over ranking Balance out service Tell customers where there is a taxi?

Real-time parking availability Intro…. Innovative solutions to make finding a parking space easier and help reduce congestion Providing real time information about availability of parking to reduce circling …vehicles can spend on average 15 mins looking for a space Bay sensor programme overview …how it works Over 3000 sensors installed across central London …paid-for and disabled bays initially Scope to roll out further …intention is to install sensors in EV bays Park Right App Real-time info at your fingertips Filter by bay type And navigate to the bay Next version of the app to feature cycle parking and off-street EV locations Millions of vehicle movements from 3500 bays

Payment The key to one touch payment Customer happiness Need to allow for many different ways to pay Make it invisible to the user Make it simple to pay and to stop paying Dongle or movement sensor in phone/ vehicle One Click parking - Don’t rely on people! Refunds, customer care etc – think about the detail of the customer journey

Open API Detailed static data REAL TIME availability Bay type, location, tariffs, capacity, hours of operation REAL TIME availability Details to allow users to pay to park by mobile phone LIVE parking suspension details So your self driving car doesn’t try and park in a suspended bay Make a catalogue Not just your parking data, standards and interoperability Put it out there for others to use https://api.parkright.io/

Big Data What does data tell us about parking use? Trends, habits, behaviours Re-think how public realm use Can we improve operations and policy? Enforcement vs customer experience Dynamic pricing

Overall Benefits Solutions have the potential to save motorists time, stress, money, while dramatically increasing productivity Cities benefit from reduced traffic, congestion and pollution More efficient use of on-street resources Motorists spend less time searching for parking Better balance of bay occupancy across the network Improved customer experience and ease of payment A vibrant High Street

Next steps … Sensors and Apps deployed - first results coming soon Lessons learned paper for DfT to share with other LAs Parking data standards and LA implications - working with BPA on their Parking 20:20 vision
