Presentation transcript:

What is Leadership? Both a process and a property. The process is the use of non-coercive influence to direct and coordinate the activities of the members of an organized group toward the accomplishment of group objectives. As a property, it is the set of qualities or characteristics attributed to those who are perceived to successfully employ such influence. Sort of ties together the stuff the book is talking about. Implications: Both a person and an act/behavior Does not involve force Implies followship, for one to influence, must permit himself to be influenced Organized around a common purpose Doesn’t restrict to one designated member. It’s a dynamic process, many leaders may coexist.

Four Competencies Management of attention through vision Management of meaning through communication (aha, Hayakawa has a place) Management of trust through reliability and constancy Management of self through knowing one’s skills and deploying them effectively (the assessments) Vision – the kaleidoscope quote, pg xxiii.

My Personal Favorite Lao Tzu: A leader is best when people barely know he exists, Not so good when people obey and acclaim him, Worse when they despise him. But of a good leader, who talks little, When his task is done, his aim fulfilled, they will all say, we did it ourselves. Instruct them to look at the process model on page 5 Leader – person who takes charge and guides the performance or activity Follower – person who performs under the guidance and instruction of a leader Context – is the situation, formal or informal, social or work, dynamic or static. By-products – nearly anything arising from interplay between the leader-follower and leader-situation

History of Leadership Universal Traits Universal Behaviors Consideration Initiating Structure Contingent Traits Fiedler’s Contingency Model Contingent Behaviors Path-Goal Situational Leadership Vroom-Yetton Universal – one best way Contingent – depends on the situation Trait – stable and enduring characteristic Behavior – the action of the leader Follow the notes from Jago’s article.
