Division Problems Jodi has to decrease the temperature of a chemical solution by 20°C. She can only decrease it 4°C at a time so crystals won’t form. How many times must she decrease the temperature? Tim lost a total of 150 points in five questions on a TV game show. What was his mean point loss per question?

Applying Integer Division (Problems) Example Jodi has to decrease the temperature of a chemical solution by 20°C. She can only decrease it 4°C at a time so crystals won’t form. How many times must she decrease the temperature? Solution: -20 ÷ (-4) = 5 Jodi will need to decrease the temperature 5 times. This shows that dividing a negative integer by a negative integer results in a positive quotient.

Applying Integer Division (Problems) Example Tim lost a total of 150 points in five questions on a TV game show. What was his mean point loss per question? Solution: -150 ÷ 5 = -30 Tim’s mean loss per question is 30 points. This shows that dividing a negative integer by a positive integer results in a negative quotient.

Multiplying/Dividing Rules The rules for multiplying and dividing integers are the same When you multiply or divide the same signs, the answer will be positive 35 ÷ 7 = 5 -2 x (-4) = 8 When you multiply or divide different signs, the answer will be negative 35 ÷ (-7) = -5 -2 x 4 = -8
