To Rebel or Not to Rebel... Do Now Question: Did everyone in the British colonies support the American Revolution? or... Would you have supported the American Revolution? Why or why not?

To Rebel or Not to Rebel... Patriots Loyalists vs.

Who Were Patriots? What demographics were usually patriots? Merchants Workers in cities Non-British immigrants

Who Were Loyalists? What demographics were usually loyalists? People appointed (hired) by the King Farmers in rural areas Native Americans

City vs. Country People living in cities were more likely to be Patriots, while people living in the country were more likely to be Loyalists. This split between City and Country continues... Civil War: Urban North vs. the Rural/Agricultural South Post WW II: Cities tend to be more “blue” (Democratic), Country tends to be more “red” (Republican)
