Title: Review of Peter’s Gospel: Mark Text: Mark 1-16 Mark 8:29 (NIV84) 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” By: Pastor Micah Adamson October 2, 2016 Mark 8:29 (NIV84) Title

Peter as the author of Mark History tells us that John Mark wrote the Gospel of Mark and also summarized the Apostle Peter’s eyewitness account of Jesus (2 Peter 1:15). The Gospel of Mark was included in the NT cannon as Peter’s gospel, but Peter focused on Jesus rather than himself.

What’s special about Mark: Why are the gospels different from each other? If Mark retells the story of a healing miracle, it will be Jesus healing someone on their deathbed, from an unclean disease or the power of the devil, or from blindness/deafness/muteness. If Mark retells the story of a revealing miracle, it will connect Jesus to Moses and/or Elijah. If Mark retells a parable, it will almost always be a parable of plant growth and fruit. If Mark retells a story including gentiles, it will show that Jesus didn’t just come for the Jews.

The 16 chapters of Mark form two halves of the book: Before and after the events of Mark 8 In Mark 1-8, the disciples learn who Jesus is = The Christ/Son of God/Son of Man. Christ/Messiah/Anointed One/Coming King in the line of David (Isaiah 9:6-7) Son of God (Psalm 2:1-12, Psalm 110:1-8) Son of Man/Judge of the final judgement (Daniel 7:9-14) In Mark 9-16, they learn what it means that Jesus is the Christ = He came to die and rise again. At the turning point in Mark 8, Peter confesses that Jesus is the Christ.

Mark 1 - Jesus the Son of God Mark 1:1, 11 (NIV84) 1 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God… 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

Mark 2 - Jesus the Son of Man Mark 2:10-11 (NIV84) 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins….” He said to the paralytic, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

Mark 3 - Jesus and the Holy Spirit Mark 3:28-29 (NIV84) 28 I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. 29 But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin.”

Mark 4 - Jesus’ Parables on the Kingdom of God Mark 4:11-12 (NIV84) 11 He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables 12 so that, “ ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’

Mark 5 - Jesus vs. Demons, Disease, and Death Mark 5:41-42 (NIV84) 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.

Mark 6 - Jesus the new Moses Matthew 6:51-52 (NIV84) 51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened.

Mark 7 - Jesus and the Jews and Gentiles Mark 7:23 (NIV84) 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’

Mark 8 - Jesus the Christ/Messiah /Anointed One/Coming King Mark 8:29 (NIV84) 29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

Mark 9 - Jesus’ Glory at His Transfiguration Mark 9:2b-4 (NIV84) 2 …There [Jesus] was transfigured before them. 3 His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4 And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.

Mark 10 - Jesus on how to be saved /Enter the Kingdom of God/Inherit Eternal life Mark 10:24, 26-27 (NIV84) 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!... 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” 27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Mark 11 - Jesus the Son of David at the Triumphal Entry Mark 11:9-10 (NIV84) 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” 10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest!”

Mark 12 - Jesus the Son of the Vineyard Owner, the capstone, & un-trappable teacher Mark 12:10-11 (NIV84) 10 Haven’t you read this scripture: “ ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 11 the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

Mark 13 - Jesus on the End of the Age Mark 13:5-7 (NIV84) 5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.

Mark 14 - Jesus’ Jewish Trial: as the Christ/Son of God/Son of Man/I AM Mark 14:61b-62 (NIV84) 61 …Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Mark 15 - Jesus’ Gentile Trial and Execution: as the King of the Jews/Israel Mark 15:26 (NIV84) 26 The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.

Mark 16 - Jesus’ Resurrection, a preview of Acts, and the challenge to believe Mark 16:11-14 (NIV84) 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it. 12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. 13 These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either. 14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.

Let’s thank and honor Jesus for: All of who He is as the Christ (king), the Son of God (LORD), and the Son of Man (judge). Fulfilling the OT law and prophets and letting us gentiles in on the salvation promised to Jews. Overcoming the blindness/deafness/hardheartedness of our unbelief in Jesus to give us faith. Helping us to continue to grow and produce the fruit of faith. Feeding us with the bread of His own body broken for us. Cleansing us of the uncleanness of our sin by His blood shed for us. Conquering the devil and demons, death and disease, and making all things right at His return.
