August 30, 2011 Welcome to Ms. Wu’s math class! Please do the following quietly: Put up name tent. Copy down homework in planner. Start grading homework with grading pen. Work individually on the warm-up in pen. You may use the same warm up sheet (draw a horizontal line and write today’s date). _______________________________________________________ WARM-UP: Write a mathematical expression for the following statements: [Use “n” for number] “six less than a number” “twice the sum of six and a number” “the quotient of four and a number”

Intro to Functions Presentations Each table will present one of the problem scenarios. Compare your tables, graphs, and equations and pick the best to present.

Vocabulary Independent variable: input variable Dependent variable: output variable Domain: set of inputs Range: set of outputs Discrete: Only a finite number of values possible Continuous: an infinite number of values possible

Independent and Dependent Variables Which is the independent variable, age (years 1-10) or height? Age As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable…. increases

Independent and Dependent Variables Which is the independent variable, flavor of gum or time chewed? Time As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable…. decreases

Independent and Dependent Variables Which is the independent variable, amount of payoff or number of lottery winners? Winners As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable…. decreases

Building Chimneys Activity For 10 minutes, work in pairs to build the chimneys and fill in the table. If you finish early, you may start working on the following questions. We will discuss them as a class.

Exit Expectations Return materials to original location, return any borrowed items, and clean up area. Wait for me to dismiss, not the bell. Push in chairs before you leave the room.
