INTRODUCTION (Perez, S. 2015) The purpose of this manual is to provide an overview of the benefits of social learning to the staff. With the realization of these benefits the staff can then learn to use social learning in advancing their own professional development. There are several social media tools available, and many of those tools can be used for social media learning, Facebook is perhaps the most well- known, and certainly the most used, social media site with approximately 1.1 billion unique accounts (EBizMBA, 2016). By comparison, the next most popular social media site, Twitter, has 310 million users (EBizMBA, 2016). Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube will be discussed in this manual.

OVERVIEW OF THE MANUAL Target Audience The Self-Guided Social Media Training Manual is intended for all employees of the organization. Objective After reviewing this manual, employees will be able to use social learning in advancing their own professional development. Social Media Tools to be Discussed Facebook LinkedIn YouTube

OVERVIEW OF SOCIAL LEARNING Social learning is using a social platform such as Facebook to interact, learn, and collaborate with people who have similar interests. Learning through social mediums allow the learner to observe and emulate the behaviors of people they trust as a credible resource (Culatta, 2015). Social media tools are easily integrated and accessible from any mobile device. Using social media promotes sharing knowledge, building communities of similar interest, and collaboration.

SOCIAL MEDIA TOOLS Social learning is using a social platform such as Facebook to interact, learn, and collaborate with people who have similar interests. Learning through social mediums allow the learner to observe and emulate the behaviors of people they trust as a credible resource (Culatta, 2015). For the purpose of training, modeling the expected behavior is important to the foundation of the training and the expected behavior change (Culatta, 2015). The tools in this manual were chosen for their versatility and networking capabilities. These tools will assist in developing a personal learning network. (Canady, 2011)

Facebook is a social media platform organizations can use to leverage strategic advertising, personal friendships, professional relationships and potential contacts. The internal networking pages can help organizations build a following around their brand. Each option offers a basic template to fill in information and upload media. Ads can target a location, age or interest, and help build a community around an organization (Myles, 2016). Facebook can be used as a marketing platform for promotions. Using sales incentives, such as uploading a coupon or discount code, can lead customers to your business. (Find us on Facebook, n.d.) (Facebook logo, 2015)

This social network is much more professional; it is not intended for people to add friends, but to network and communicate with people in their industry. It allows people to follow companies and get updates on their latest news and ideas. Alerts are at times accompanied by links that will take you to a presentation or video on the new product or service that is being offered. More importantly, all the updates are pertinent to the industry the user is in, and is meant to be focused on people’s specific needs based on their professional profile. Users can also share and review professional development that they have received to encourage professionals in their network to try new products or strategies (Shin, 2014). Twitter is one of the most important social media tools for creating an effective social learning environment. The social media platform allows for a personalized learning experience where users can customize the feed to topics of interest. Twitter provides concise snippets of information in 140 characters or less. Users can include links and images in their Tweets. In a school setting, teachers can “use Twitter to share resources and lend quick support to peers with similar interests” (Ferriter, W.M., 2010). Users can search tweets by topic and narrow down the items shown in the feed. The search function, global network of users and real-time updates makes Twitter “a constant source of new ideas to explore” (Ferriter, W.M., 2010). To create a free account, go to https://twitter.com/. Vecteezy, 2010-2016) (Laird, 2012)

Many people see YouTube as just an entertainment site, but it can also be a useful learning tool. One thing that makes YouTube a useful learning tool is that videos evoke response (Pappas, 2015). It is rare to see an interesting video that does not have comments attached to them. Interaction is the essence of social learning so the ability to get learners to interact is key to any useful learning tool. Other factors that make YouTube a good tool for social learning is its cross platform functionality, it is easy to integrate into lessons, videos can be tailored in length, and learners can create and post their own videos (Pappas, 2015). Cross platform functionality is especially important because it removes some of the technological barriers from learning. By removing the need to purchase specific applications or hardware the tool is more useable. (Logo Spike, n.d.) (Logo Spike, n.d.)

EFFECTIVE USE OF SOCIAL LEARNING Barriers to Effective Social Learning People are not always familiar with the technology. People need to be provided with training and policies to ensure they are familiar with the technology and know how to use it appropriately. Organizational Role in Ensuring Effective Workforce Training Training is an important part of effectiveness, and should be provided to users so that they are familiar with appropriate standards of use as well as how to use social media to share and gain information. Ethical Dilemmas One needs to be careful how social media is used within an organization, and the organizational policy for social media use must be clearly communicated to reflect this. Anything posted on social media should reflect positively on the organization. Importance of Social Learning in the Organization Social learning provides a much-needed medium for users to learn information, work collaboratively, and share resources. Organizations need to make social learning a priority due to the changing nature of today’s society and the effect that change is having on how employees interact.

EFFECT OF RESOURCE ALLOCATION Social learning transforms any organization into a continuous learning environment. Accountability When implementing a social learning tool in the workplace, designers should consider ways to hold employees accountable for proper use of the social media forum and professionalism. Hierarchy In a social learning environment, there is a place for everyone. In a social learning environment, there is little pressure to share and communicate. Relationships A social learning environment in the workplace fosters richer relationships among staff with diverse skill sets. Through the use of social learning, staff is able to interact and share knowledge across departments.

CONCLUSION Social media provides a means for organizations to implement social learning. Some may find it easy to use, while others may require some guidance. This social media training manual will be helpful with guiding the organization in how to incorporate social learning into professional development and other aspects of the organization.
