SERVANT LEADERSHIP

JESUS CALLS ALL CHRISTIANS TO BE LEADERS TO INFLENCE OTHERS TO: LOVE WISELY & WELL LIVE CHARITABLY LIVE HOPEFULLY LIVE FAITHFULLY

GREENLEAF’S SERVANT LEADER THE SERVANT LEADER IS SERVANT FIRST- a natural feeling that one wants to serve THE CONSCIOUS CHOICE TO LEAD THEY ENSURE THAT OTHER PEOPLE’S HIGHEST PRIORITY NEEDS ARE BEING SERVED DO THOSE SERVED GROW AS PEOPLE? WHAT IS THE EFFECT ON THE LEAST PRIVILEGED IN SOCIETY

SERVANT LEADERSHIP Leadership is “about caring for people” Leadership is “being a useful resource for people” Leadership is “being present for people” Leadership is “building a community at work” Leadership is “letting go of ego, bringing your spirit to work, being your best and most authentic self”

SERVANT LEADERSHIP Leadership is “creating a place in which people can do good work, can find meaning in their work, and can bring their spirits to work” Leadership is “paying attention” Leadership requires LOVE!

DEFINING MOMENTS FOR FRANCIS HE LISTENED TO HIS DEEPER CALL-returned home instead of enlisting in 4th Crusade EMBRACING THE LEPER-he began a loving service to the poorest, most despised members of society REBUILDING MY CHURCH-gave money to the poor and rebuilt the Church. RENUNCIATION-turned his back on his former life

DEFINING MOMENTS FOR FRANCIS GO INTO THE WORLD-his example and preaching led others to follow his life of service RESIGNATION-as a true servant leader, Francis chose the common good and demonstrated how a serve leader gives priority to the need of the community, He put aside his ego for love.

BECOMING A FRANCISCAN SERVANT LEADER A DESIRE TO SERVE THE GENUINE NEEDS OF OUR SISTERS & BROTHERS

LISTENING “Grant that I may seek not so much to be understood as to understand” Francis implored his followers to LISTEN

LISTENING AS LEADING Listening begins with attention. The good listener will retain what is expressed and refrain from value judgements. Good listeners try to hear everything that is said, not just what they expect or want to hear. Good listening communicates attentiveness This type of listening gives the listener a better grasp of what people are saying and how they feel about it.

LISTENING IS NOT ONLY A RESPECTFUL WAY TO TREAT OTHER PEOPLE, IT IS AN EFFICIENT WAY TO RELATE TO THEM.

DISCERNMENT LOOK FOR THE FACTS IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES SEEK INSIGHT BEYOND YOUR OWN TURN INWARD EXPECT GOD’S HELP NAME YOUR DECISION AND ACT

EMPATHY IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT BEING “NICE”, BUT MORE ABOUT SERVING THE GENUINE NEEDS OF PEOPLE ONCE WE UNDERSTAND THEM BY STANDING IN THEIR SHOES.

LEADERSHIP IS ABOUT PEOPLE IT IS MORE THAN ACCOMPLISHING A GOAL OR MISSION THE FOCUS OF WHO BENEFITS FROM LEADERSHIP SHOULD BE ON THE FOLLOWERS, NOT THE LEADER

EMPATHY IT IS NOT ONLY AT THE HEART OF SERVANT LEADERSHIP, IT IS INDEED, AT THE HEART OF ALL MORAL GROWTH.

GREATEST COMMANDMENTS LOVE GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART & SOUL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF https://youtu.be/LLSfQ7A86wE

ROMANS 12:15-16 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those that weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are”

DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU THE GOLDEN RULE DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU

THE NATIVITY SCENE BY RE-ENACTING THE BIRTH OF JESUS, FRANCIS COULD EMPATHIZE WITH THE CHILD JESUS, MARY, JOSEPH, AND THE SHEPHERDS!

ST.FRANCIS

LEARNING FRANCISCAN EMPATHY 1. LISTENING WITH THE EAR OF OUR HEART 2. WE SHOULD ATTEND TO BODY LANGUAGE AND TONE OF VOICE, AND CONTEXT OF THE SITUATION 3. AVOID INTERRUPTING AND GIVING ADVICE. 4. REFER TO PEOPLE BY THE NAME THEY PREFER.

LEARNING FRANCISCAN EMPATHY 5. BE FULLY PRESENT TO PEOPLE 6. SMILE A LOT 7. GENTLY ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO SPEAK-OFFER AN ATTENTIVE NOD, SO PEOPLE KNOW YOU ARE LISTENING 8. FOCUS ON WHAT PEOPLE ARE DOING RIGHT

HOW DO YOU TREAT PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT USEFUL TO YOU??? ARE YOU NICE TO ONLY PEOPLE YOU GET SOMETHING FROM? WHO DO YOU GIVE YOUR TIME TO? DO YOU IGNORE PEOPLE AROUND YOU?

REQUIRES DISCIPLINE AND GENEROSITY OF SOUL. EMPATHY REQUIRES DISCIPLINE AND GENEROSITY OF SOUL.
