Various ethno-racial and religious groups within the countries where Arabic is spoken: Most Arabs are Muslims. The majority of Muslim Arabs follow Sunni Islam while the others follow Shia Islam.3,4 “The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims arose from a disagreement over the choice of Muhammad's successor and subsequently acquired broader political significance, as well as theological and juridical dimensions.”5

Most Arabs are Muslim although several others practice other religions such as Christianity, Druze, or Baha’i.3,4

…that’s 4.23% of the world’s population!6 267 MILLION people in the world speak Arabic as their primary language…

Arabic Dialects: Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is the official Arabic language. It can be written and spoken, and there is no difference between the written and the spoken form. In its written form, Modern Standard Arabic is the language of literature and the media. Levantine Arabic is said to be most similar to MSA.7

The Arabic Alphabet:

How Arabic is similar to English: How Arabic is different from English: Arabic has 28 consonants (English 24) and 8 vowels/diphthongs (English 22). Short vowels are unimportant in Arabic and do not appear in writing. Texts are read from right to left. There is no “uppercase” “lowercase” in Arabic and there aren’t as many punctuation rules as in English.8

Grammar Rules: Arabic follows similar rules than those of Spanish because the article changes based on who it is describing. In contrast to the Spanish language, the article will also change based on who you are talking to.
