Social Worker- Helping students with issues they deal with at school, at home and in life.

STEM Academy Grades 7 & 8 Students have the same school counselor for grades 7 & 8. The counselor loops with the class. School counselors work with students individually, in small groups and in large group settings. School counselors work with students in class settings to develop executive functioning skills, social skills and offering support to students in need.

STEM Academy Grades 7-8 Academic Management Lessons Basic strategies needed for managing their time and work completion. Create a common understanding of the need for and use of academic management skills. Use of a planner To-Do Lists & Prioritization How to effectively schedule your time daily and weekly

Exploration & Discovery Day ‘17 Students participated in four hands-on workshops facilitated by presenters in a wide variety of career fields. This event is designed to support the themes introduced in school counseling lessons - including the diversity of careers already in existence as well as the way future jobs and the world of work are evolving. Emphasis on how middle school classes are already preparing students for their futures (even in careers that may not exist yet) through the development of academic & workplace skills.

Transition to High School Grade 8 School Counselor works closely with Freshman Counselor to ensure a smooth transition into high school. Assisting students and parents in choosing courses through group and individually meetings. “Get To Know the High School” Day for students and Night for families. Attending transition meetings for students with educational plans.

Transition to High School Get to know the High School Day Meet with current high school students and department chairs by subject to discuss offerings See some of the current work being done in high school courses.

Transition to High School Late August: Camp Burgess Reunite as a class at the end of the summer Spend the day with team building activities Learn more about SHS from Peer Leaders and support staff

Freshman Year Begin post secondary planning with the freshman counselor Introduce the Naviance post secondary planning tool Learning style class lesson to help students discover their learning style and how they learn best. Gain an understanding of what post secondary planning is and why it is important to think about this throughout high school Start a 4 year plan for high school

4 Year Plan - Begins Freshman year!

Sophomore Year Continue using the Naviance program for post secondary planning Career Exploration Take PSAT and explore Big Future through College Board Discuss importance of good grades. Build your resume- community service, participation in clubs, organizations and sports.

Junior Year PSAT in Fall/ Results in Winter/SAT in Spring College search/college planning workshops Attend College Fairs Making college list, touring and discuss the application process Meet with college representatives from all over the country right here at Sandwich High School Parent College planning night Senior Profile through Naviance Meet individually with counselor and parent(s) to plan senior year and review college planning process

Senior Year Continue to meet with colleges Finalizing College list and begin application process Take SAT for second time/Take SAT subject tests Letters of recommendation College applications and essays Scholarship information and applications Keep grades up!

2017 Field trip to Cape Cod Community College Post Secondary Plans 2017 Field trip to Cape Cod Community College 19 senior students; 2 Counselors Took College Board Accuplacer Toured Campus Interviewed with Admissions Met with Financial Aid officers Completed Mass Transfer plan (for those with a 4 year college plan)
