Symbiotic Relationships
How Do We Relate?. Relationships Many organisms have developed a close relationship with other organisms of different species. These close relationships.
 All living things interact with their environment, both biotic and abiotic  Most living things produce more offspring than can survive.
Understanding PopulationsSection 2 Objectives Explain the difference between niche and habitat. Describe the five major types of interactions between species.
Community Interactions. Community interactions, such as competition, predation, and various forms of symbiosis, can powerfully affect an ecosystem.
Organisms can interact in different ways.
ORGANISMS CAN INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS ORGANISMS INTERACT IN DIFFERENT WAYS SURVIVAL OF ONE SPECIES MIGHT DEPEND ON ANOTHER SPECIES –SYMBIOSIS = relationship.
Symbiosis Branch of biology dealing with the interactions among organisms. Four Main Types of Symbiotic Relationships: 1.Predation 2.Parasitism 3.Mutualism.
Symbiotic Relationships. Interactions Between Organisms What’s the term for when one organism eats another?
Ecosystem Interactions Interactions The organisms in a community are capable of interacting with each other in some very complex ways. – They can: Hurt.
Ecological Relationships. Competition and Predation Competition – occurs when organisms of the same or different species attempt to use an ecological.
Symbiotic Relationships The close association between two or more organisms of different species.
Mutualism Both species benefit “+ +” relationship Examples – Ants protect aphids that provide them food – Clown fish / sea anemones.

Relationships within Ecosystems The who, what, where, when, why of it all.

Species Interactions. Predation When one organism eats other organism Prey: The organism that is eaten Predator: The organism that does the eating.
Interactions Between Organisms. Symbiosis  Symbiosis occurs when two species live closely together in a relationship that lasts over time  If you’ve.

Presentation transcript:

Symbiotic Relationships (Species Interactions) Living Environment

1. Predation One organism kills and eats another Predator – the eater Prey – the eaten +/- Ex: lions feed on zebra

2. Competition Occurs when more than one species used the same limited resource -/- Ex: lions and hyenas eat the same prey or a maple tree and grass competing for nutrients

3. Parasitism One organism lives on another causing harm Host – organism being lived on Parasite – organism causing the harm +/- Ex: ticks, fleas, tapeworms

4. Mutualism Both organisms benefit from the relationship +/+ Ex: intestinal bacteria in humans, oxpeckers on zebras

5. Commensalism One organisms benefits and the other is not affected +/0 Ex: remora fish and shark

CFU Name and describe one symbiotic relationship and give an example not discussed in class.
