Classification of Life

What’s This? プーマ Puma 美洲狮 Cougar Panther Mountain Lion Catamount

Classification of Life Some animals have several common names and people use different languages, therefore, we need a classification system to organize and name animals to reduce confusion Meow, I totally agree!

Systematics Systematics (or taxonomy) is the science of naming and classifying living things according to characteristics including: Appearance Function Cell type DNA

Systematics Systematics uses 8 different levels to classify things: Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

Systematics For example… Domain Eukarya Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivore Family Ursidae Genus Ursus Species Arctos

Scientific Name Puma concolor The scientific name for puma is: This two-word naming convention is called the binomial nomenclature Names can be further abbreviated such as P. concolor The genus starts with uppercase The species starts with lowercase The name is italicized Many are based on Latin Genus Species

Species and Genus A species is often defined as a group of organisms in which two individuals can reproduce fertile offspring

Systematics Scavenger Hunt On a clean two-sided page, write the title “Systematics Scavenger Hunt”, add date and page number Update your TOC Glue/tape the hunting list to the left side Bring your lab notebook, pencil, eraser, phone/laptop and box In the field, you *MUST* stay in the teacher’s line of sight Return to the spectators’ stand to finish the last question

Human Species Rank Name Meaning Domain Eukarya Have cellular organs Kingdom Animalia Animal Phylum Chordata Have a bony spine Class Mammalia Give milk to young Order Primata Monkeys and humans Family Hominidae Large primata Genus Homo Human like Species Sapiens Wise
