Genetically Modified Crops Aaron Courtney, Cariey Barickman, Derek Reed

Introduction Genetically modified (GM) foods are foods derived from organisms whose genetic material (DNA) has been modified in a way that does not occur naturally through the introduction of a gene from a different organism. Currently available GM foods stem mostly from plants, but in the future foods derived from GM microorganisms or GM animals are likely to be introduced on the market.

Cons Direct health effects potential to provoke allergic reaction Cereals, snack bars, snack boxes, cookies, processed lunch meats, and crackers all contain large amounts of high risk food ingredients.

Cons Can pose unknown risks to toxins and allergens. Risk of interaction or reactions that have never been seen before . It is dangerous that there are no labels on the food to tell that it is modified.

Cons Creation of super weeds and other environmental risks. Adversely changing the nutrient in a crop. There have been many cases of animals dying from eating geneticly modified crops.

Pros In the future, genetic modification could be aimed at altering the nutrient Content of food, reducing its allergenic potential, or improving the efficiency Food production systems

Pros All Gm foods should be assessed before beginning allowed on Market Imprue crop protection FAO/WHO codex guidelines exist for risk analysis of Gm food Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be defined as organisms

Pros Plants animals or microorganisms in which the genetic material (DNA) has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally Gm foods are developed and marketed because there is some perceived advantages either to producer or consumer of these foods
