Scale Drawings Scale drawing: a 2-D drawing that represents a real object (for example, a blueprint) Scale model: a proportional 3D model of an object (for example, a realistic sculpture) Scale:
Example 1 On a map, Los Angeles is 2 inches from San Diego. The scale says 1 in:60 mi. What is the actual distance?
Example 2 You are creating a map of your room with a scale of 2 in:3 ft. In real life, your bed is 8 feet long. How many inches long will it be on your map?
Finding a Scale Example 3 Fully simplify the fraction A room is 36 feet wide. On a blueprint, it is only 18 inches wide. Find the scale of the blueprint.
Scale Factor A scale written without units The units must be the same to write them as a scale factor!
Example 4 A model of a building is 10 inches tall. The actual monument is 100 feet tall. What is the scale? What is the scale factor?
Example 5 Strawberry Point, Iowa has a strawberry sculpture that is 180 inches tall. If the scale factor of the model is 120:1, how tall was the actual strawberry?
