TBL, Status, Plans, Experiments Status of components Installations Plans for shutdown 2008/2009 Experiments in 2009 Outlook CTF3 collaboration meeting, 28.01.2009 Steffen Döbert
Status of the prototype components PETS tank: under fabrication at CIEMAT (see Fernando’s talk) BPM’s: 2 prototypes finished, one installed and tested with beam Series: under fabrication (see Angeles talk) Quads: Prototypes finished and accepted Series delivery end February Quad-Movers: Prototype installed and tested, Series under fabrication (see F.Toral) High power rf: directional couplers, loads prototypes under fabrication, Series: CEA white paper contribution for 8 sets Low Level rf: channels for prototypes testing available Other Beam diagnostics: defined and under fabrication
Tank integration
Quadrupole production at BINP Acceptance test of first prototype done in December 2008 successfully (see Antony’s talk)
BPS under beam test First beam with losses, Tested with beam successfully First beam with losses, Ringing problem has been investigated and solved by the experts in a nice collaborative effort
RF components prototypes, high power load at factory Water load with disk window, compact and inexpensive More risk, therefore back up of ‘standard’ components
TBL integration into CLEX
TBL diagnostic section
TBL beam line installation ongoing Beam line girders in place
Installation-Schedule Limited by component arrival, we will have one PETS tank and 3 movers
Pets production scenario Two independent production lines assumed (CIEMAT, CERN)
What about CDR in 2010 ? Unlikely to install more than 8 PETS until mid 2010 Can we define a feasibility result using 8 PETS 8 PETS only E0 = 130 MeV I=28 A Eff = 33 % (was 65% for 16) 1.2 GW of rf power E0 = 100 MeV Eff = 42 %
‘Advantages’ of 8 PETS for CDR and 8 PETS later Lower risk, since PETS are not fully verified Fabricate the next generation PETS for the second half lower cost improved engineering improved designs improved damping new on/off better adapted for two beam acceleration prototypes for new facility ? Easier experimentation to start with
The current plan for TBL Organize and launch production of at least 7 more PETS with our collaborations to be commissioned with beam in 2010. Approach: parallel fabrication at CIEMAT and CERN using multiples vendors CDR demonstration measurement milestones at the end of 2010 Assuming continuous production with two institutes in parallel TBL could be completed in 2011 profiting from first series experience Second batch has to be launched early 2010 Full demonstration of drive beam decelerator end of 2011
Experiments with TBL in 2009 Evaluation of PETS tank prototype with beam and high power (Ideal: produce > 100 MW = 23A) Produce > 20 A drive beam Resolution measurement of BPS (5 microns specified) Beam based quad alignment with mover Commission beam line and diagnostics Transport beam with 2 or 3 PETS installed Measure beam properties
Conclusions TBL is happening now Delays a bit everywhere, components, planning, testing, fabrication, but still reasonable given the available resources and complexity Beam line installation planned for winter shutdown, short stop in fall 2009 to install more PETS if possible Critical to test PETS tank prototype, pacing item for future decisions ! Testing rf components might become an issue Overall TBL goal with respect to CDR in 2010 has been reviewed
