Informative Writing A guide...

Informative Writing – Some general tips to remember Use a formal tone • Be concise and to the point • Writing should be logically structured • Writing will normally be about a single topic • Paragraphs should have a topic sentence • Focus on facts and details related to the subject • Write in the present tense • Use the third person, it should be unbiased • Final sentence is a summary statement

Informative Writing Essay Structure Intro – what the essay is going to be about Paragraph 1 – your first main point Paragraph 2 – your second main point Paragraph 3 – your third main point Conclusion – Summarising your essay and its findings.

Informative Writing – Your introduction Like all types of writing, the introduction should include the following: A brief couple of sentences about the purpose of your essay – what you’re trying to inform your reader about. A summary of the main points you will be discussing in the essay. 3 main points is more than enough.

Informative Writing – The body of your essay Remember – each paragraph should be about a single topic. It should include a topic sentence at the beginning (of each paragraph). This will sum up what you are going to talk about in the remainder of the paragraph. Be careful not to bring in any points you are going to make later. Each point is made – and developed - in each paragraph.

Structuring YOUR essay Decide what your topic is going to be about. Now find out three different points that you can develop in your writing. Gas: 3 different types. Warfare: 3 different types. Weapons of World War 1: 3 different types.

Structuring YOUR essay Or... Trench warfare The dimensions of the trenches, problems that would cause. Disease in the trenches. Life in the trenches. This can be done for any topic – just think of three different parts about it to write about. Each part then becomes a paragraph.
