CFI John R Evans Leaders Fund Construction/Renovation
Who Should Be Concerned About This? ALL CFI APPLICANTS Even if applicants do not anticipate that renovation/construction will be required for their project, applicants must discuss the requested infrastructure and space where it is to be housed with U of A Facilities & Operations (or Alberta Health Services (AHS), if the infrastructure is to be housed in AHS-managed hospital space) to ensure that a proper due diligence process is completed.
CFI Requirements Relating to Construction/Renovation Work required for CFI-funded equipment to be installed and operated is an eligible cost for CFI funding Eligible construction/renovation costs include direct costs, soft costs (planning, permits, insurance, etc.) and contingency costs The CFI expects construction/renovation plans and costs to be developed well beyond the conceptual stage when a proposal is submitted The most feasible option for construction/renovation must be identified A detailed estimate for construction/renovation must accompany the proposal * Ref: Section 4.6.2 (page 15) in CFI’s Policy and Procedure Guide, 2013
Why Is Consultation Required? Equipment and space requirements must be thoroughly reviewed before applications are submitted to the CFI The university cannot request any further funding from the CFI after the project has been awarded Unexpected costs (e.g. renovation costs) identified after the proposal is submitted must be funded through other means If a key equipment item cannot be purchased due to unexpected space restrictions/ renovation costs identified after the project is awarded, there is a risk that the CFI may require the project to be terminated and the full award to be returned to the CFI
Construction/Renovation Consultations University of Alberta Facilities and Operations (F&O) will develop estimates for construction/renovation work in University of Alberta space Alberta Health Services (AHS) will develop estimates for AHS space Equipment and space requirements must be discussed with space planners at least 3-4 months before submitting JELF application to ensure time for a thorough review to be completed
