Unit 2 The Living World

Unit 2 Lesson 2 Watch “Lethal Seas” (55 minutes long) on-line 2. Answer the questions in your IAN.

Ocean Acidification http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/earth/lethal-seas.html In your IAN, answer the following questions in a summary AND draw a picture/diagram that depicts what this video was about. Use color and title on top! What did Mark Weigardt notice in 2007? Compare the healthy larvae with an unhealthy larvae (physically & behaviorally). Why is the absorption of CO2 into the ocean considered a good thing? What is driving down the pH in the ocean? EXPLAIN how it works! What do oysters (& many other invertebrates) make their shells out of? What are coral reefs made of? What is causing the bubbles in Papua New Guinea & what is it doing to the water chemistry? What was the difference in biodiversity in the corals between the pristine reef and the “bubble one”? What are pteropods & why are they important? Describe the 2 experiments performed and the difference in the behaviors between the normal pH and low pH conditions. In 3 sentences, summarize what you learned about ocean acidification.
