CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Compare and contrast writing shows the differences and similarities between two things. LONDON TOKYO - large parks - capital city - fast trains - many foreigners - expensive - big - old buildings - modern buildings This is a venn-diagram; it helps you to organize your thoughts when doing a compare and contrast writing.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST LONDON TOKYO - large parks - capital city - fast trains - many foreigners - expensive - big - old buildings - modern buildings Each circle shows you what is different (contrast). The place the circles meet is what is the same for both (compare). What two things are compared? What are the comparing characteristics? What are the contrasting characteristics?

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Think of a city you know well besides Taipei. Now, compare and contrast 3 things with it and Taipei. Use them to share with the class some things the city has in common with Taipei, and things that are different.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Look at these sentences and say if they’re the same or different: ____ Tokyo is bigger than London. ____ London has many large parks, whereas Tokyo does not. ____ Unlike Tokyo, London has many foreigners living there. ____ Both London and Tokyo are capital cities. ____ London has many old buildings. In contrast Tokyo has a lot of modern buildings. ____ London is as expensive as Tokyo. ____ Trains in London are not as fast as trains in Tokyo.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Now that we know which are the same and which are different, say which word(s) in the sentence show compare or contrast: (D) Tokyo is bigger than London. (D) London has many large parks, whereas Tokyo does not. (D) Unlike Tokyo, London has many foreigners living there. (S) Both London and Tokyo are capital cities. (D) London has many old buildings. In contrast, Tokyo has a lot of modern buildings. (S) London is as expensive as Tokyo. (D) Trains in London are not as fast as trains in Tokyo.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Use the words below to join these sentences in your notebook: Lemons are yellow. Limes are green. (unlike) Rome is an ancient city. Athens is too. (as…as) Mr. Simon is from England. Mr. Gary is from England. (both) A frog can live in water or on land. A fish can not. (In contrast) 101 is a very tall building. Sogo Department Store is tall. (…than) The French love cheese. The Taiwanese love stinky tofu. (whereas) The Montreal Canadiens are great. The Boston Bruins are not. (not as…as) COMPARE Both (A) and (B)… (A) is as…as (B) CONTRAST (A) is…than (B) Whereas… Unlike (A), (B)… In contrast, …

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Now, using the venn-diagram of the two cities you made (Taipei and ?), write a (1) paragraph to compare and contrast the cities. COMPARE Both (A) and (B)… (A) is as…as (B) CONTRAST (A) is…than (B) Whereas… Unlike (A), (B)… In contrast, …

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Obviously, you need to have more than one paragraph. So, reading the two paragraphs below, you will see that we talk about many different things. Not only do you need to keep the comparing and contrasting together, but you need to keep other things organized. Hens and Ducks A hen has short wings which it doesn’t use because it has a heavy body and lives on the ground. When it flies, it is clumsy and can only travel short distances. Its feet are sharp and scratch the ground to find seeds and worms. It also has a short beak for eating. A hen nests on the ground and can lay nearly 300 eggs a year.   A duck has webbed feet so it can swim easily. It has a long, flat beak which it uses to find food like small fish. It has strong wings and it can fly far. It nests in grass near water. Ducks migrate long distances and they lay 5 to 12 eggs twice a year.

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Now, complete the following chart for the features below of each bird. FEATURES Hens Ducks eggs wings  feet  beak  flight  nest  migration  food

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Now, think about what features would normally go together. FEATURES Hens Ducks eggs wings  feet  beak  flight  nest  migration  food  Make three groups so you have three (3) paragraphs. Paragraph 1: feet, _____, food Paragraph 2: _____, _____ Paragraph 3: _____, _____, wings How would you name the groups?

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Now, think about what features would normally go together. FEATURES Hens Ducks eggs wings  feet  beak  flight  nest  migration  food  Make three groups so you have three (3) paragraphs. Eating: feet, beak, food Living: eggs, nest Moving: migration, flight, wings

CREATIVE WRITING: TASK COMPARE AND CONTRAST Finally, you have organized all your thoughts. It’s time to write. You are going to make three (3) paragraphs to show how hens are different and how they are the same. Make sure you introduce each paragraph. Then compare and contrast (or contrast and compare) the two animals in each group. Remember to stick to the group, and use comparing/contrasting words. FEATURES Hens Ducks eggs wings  feet  beak  flight  nest  migration  food  COMPARE Both (A) and (B)… (A) is as…as (B) CONTRAST (A) is…than (B) Whereas… Unlike (A), (B)… In contrast, …
