ALDOT Specification Updates Scott George, P. E. Materials and Tests Engineer 2017 AAPA Conference Birmingham, AL March 23, 2017

ALDOT Procedure 372 RAP & RAS Stockpiles Stockpiles that have been inactive for at least a year shall be processed as a separate operation (i.e. not through an inline crusher) and processed in accordance with the requirements given in Section 5 and tested in accordance with Section 6 prior to incorporation in an asphalt mix design. All RAP and RAS used on State projects must be processed. The processing may take place immediately prior to incorporation into the mix (i.e. between the cold feed bin and the drum). The contractor shall ensure the stockpile is easily workable and without pieces greater than 2”. Significant re-write. Changes to stockpile processing and testing

ALDOT Procedure 372 RAP & RAS Stockpiles Blended RAP and RAS stockpiles shall be processed as follows : Materials shall be mechanically proportioned when combined into single feed stockpiles. Combination ratios shall be determined and controlled based on weight and mix type (i.e. wearing surface or binder). Electronic belt weighing devices shall be used to determine RAP and RAS weights and to monitor the flow rates to ensure the desired ratios are maintained. Ground blending of RAS is not acceptable. Fractionated stockpiles shall be processed as a separate operation Testing language Asphalt binder content testing, -No. 200 & largest sieve with 50% passing standard deviation language added RAP or Blended RAP/RAS stockpiles 10 samples first 10,000 T and one sample every 5000 T added RAS stockpiles 10 samples first 5000 T and one sample every 1000 T added

GFO 6-12 Smoothness requirements utilizing the inertial profiler shall be included for pay purposes in contracts meeting the following criteria:   On new construction projects, On resurfacing projects, where a minimum asphalt plant mix build-up of a wearing surface layer and a binder layer of uniform thickness is specified.

GFO 6-12 Exceptions to the above include the following:   Projects one mile or less in length, Bridge projects with less than a ½ mile of roadway on each side of bridge, and Projects with roads exhibiting poor geometric characteristics (e. g. numerous horizontal and/or vertical curves, large degrees of curvature, or numerous intersecting side streets). Smoothness requirements utilizing the inertial profiler shall be included for data collection purposes in contracts for resurfacing projects greater than one mile in length.

Shortage of research money. May have an alternate way to pay for the project with pavement parameters overhead.
