Pronouns after prepositions: Think back to working with Indirect Objects – all of these are normal except for the 1st person singular and the 2nd person singular informal. Pronouns will work this way following any preposition, not just “a” (A/por/para) mí (A/por/para) nosotros (A/por/para) ti (A/por/para) vosotros (A/por/para) usted (A/por/para) ustedes (A/por/para) él/ella/ [nombre] (A/por/para) ellos/ellas/[nombres]

Movement: Through or by a place Conducí por el centro. Para: Through or by a place Conducí por el centro. I drove through downtown. Towards a destination Mis amigos viajan para México. My friends are travelling to/towards Mexico.

Time: Duration of an event Ellos estudiaron por tres horas. Para: Duration of an event Ellos estudiaron por tres horas. They studied for 3 hours. Action deadline Ellos tienen que escribir un ensayo para el lunes. They have to write an essay for Monday.

Action: Reason or motive for an action or circumstances. Por: Para: Reason or motive for an action or circumstances. Ella vino tarde por el tráfico. She arrived late because of the traffic. Indication for who something is intended or done. Estoy cocinando un pastel para mi novio. I am baking a cake for my boyfriend.

POR Specific Uses

1. Movement: Motion or general location (around, through, along, by) Ejemplo: Pasamos por el parque y por el río. We passed by the park and along the river.

2. Time: Duration of an event (for, during, in) Ejemplo: Estuve en Guatemala por un mes. I was in Guatemala for a month.

3. Action: Reason or motive for an action (because of, on account of, on behalf of) Ejemplo: Lo hizo por su familia. She did it on behalf of her family.

4. Action: Object of a search (for, in search of) Ejemplos: Vengo por ti a las ocho. I’m coming for you at eight. Manuel fue por su cámara digital. Manuel went in search of his digital camera.

5. Action: Means by which something is done (by, by way of, by means of) Ejemplo: Ellos viajan por autopista. They travel by (by way of) the highway.

6. Other: Exchange or substitution (for, in exchange for) Ejemplo: Le di diner por el reproductor de MP3. I gave him money for the MP3 player.

7. Other: Unit of measure (per, by) Ejemplo: José manejaba a 120 kilómetros por hora. José was driving at 120 km per hour.

Idiomatic expressions: There are also some idiomatic expressions that use por. Copy down into your notes the ones that are on your vocab sheet.

PARA Specific Uses

1. Movement: Destination (toward, in the direction of) Ejemplo: Salimos para Córdoba el sábado We are leaving for Córdoba on Saturday.

2. Time: Deadline for a specific time in the future (by, for) Ejemplo: Él va a arreglar el carro para el viernes. He will fix the car by Friday.

3. Action: Purpose or goal + [infinitive] (in order to) Ejemplo: Juan estudia para (ser) mecánico. Juan is studying to be a mechanic. NOTE: The “in order to” expressed by “para” is understood in the English sentence, not actually included.

4. Action: Purpose + [noun] (for, used for) Ejemplo: Es una llanta para el carro. It’s a tire for the car.

5. Action: The recipient of something (for) Ejemplo: Compré una impresora para mi abuelo. I bought a printer for my grandfather.

6. Other: Comparison with others or an opinion (for, considering) Ejemplos: Para un joven, es demasiado serio. For a young person, he is too serious. Para mí, esta lección no es difícil. For me, this lesson isn’t difficult.

7. Other: In the employment of (for) Ejemplo: Sara trabaja para Telecom Argentina. Sara works for Telecom Argentina.

NOTE: Ejemplos: Caminé por el parque. VS Caminé para el parque. There are many cases where grammatically you could use either “por” or “para” in a sentence. However, the meaning of the sentence changes based on which you use. Ejemplos: Caminé por el parque. VS Caminé para el parque. I walked through the park. VS I walked to (toward) the park. Trabajó por su padre. VS Trabajó para su padre. He worked for (in place of) his father. VS He worked for his father(‘s company)
