Welcome! For this class period, we are pretending to be inside a monastery. My name will be “Abbot Deal.” We will follow a strict schedule at this monastery. As you follow the schedule, each of you will have tasks to complete. You will earn points for your team for each task you complete.

The Monastery Many people in Europe chose to spend their life as a monk and live inside a monastery. Their life was spent in service to God through prayer, worship, and work. Jobs ranged from working in farms, caring for sick, or teaching local children.

The Activity This activity will demonstrate what life was like inside a monastery. Here are your jobs. 1 will copy books (a Latin paragraph at your table.) 1 will work in the farms (spell “FARM” with the blocks) 1 will work in the hospital (spell “CARE” with the blocks) 1 will teach local children (spell “TEACH” with the blocks)

The Balance of work and prayer To simulate the balance of work and prayer in monastic life, we will follow a strict schedule. 3 minutes to work 1 minutes to pray (to simulate “prayer time” we will sit silently for 1 minute) Talking at inappropriate times will result in loss of points for your team. The winning team will have the highest average of points per person.

Read the Primary Source “One day he came to a town called Alviano to preach the word of God…The people became quiet and waited reverently, but a flock of swallows…continued to chatter away, making it impossible for the people to hear. Francis spoke to them, ‘My sisters the swallows, it’s my turn to speak now…Listen to the word of God. Stay still and be quiet until it’s over.’ To the people’s amazement, the little birds immediately stopped chattering and did not move until Francis had finished preaching.” Thomas of Celano First Life of Saint Francis What do you know about St. Francis?
