Welcome to IB Music Seminar! Darrin Cook Nancy Ziebart Teachers

Meeting Time Each Tuesday, beginning October 6th, and ending in May, just prior to the IB Music Listening Paper. 2:30-4:30 PM Room 2527 Snacks – rotation by students!

What is IB Music? IB Music class is: an overview of Music Theory Western Music History World Music Musical Forms Musical Analysis.

IB Music Grade will be based on: 50% - Internal Assessment Group Performance OR Composition 50% - External Assessment Musical Links Investigation (20%) Listening Paper Exam (30%)

Ensemble Recording Portfolio Students who are members of a Skyline daily ensemble will work in that ensemble for the year. During the course of the year, recordings are made at concerts. A concluding portfolio of the best of the performance works will be submitted as the internal assessment for each student.

Composition & Creation Portfolio Students who are members of the Composition and Creation path will complete a musical works portfolio, consisting of two (SL) or three (HL) pieces. Students have the option to create original compositions, arrangements of existing pieces, sound collages, and musical studies examples as completion options for their portfolio.

Musical Links Investigation The Musical Links Investigation is the main project of the year for all students in the class. The Musical Links Investigation will be an in-depth study of two separately evolved musical cultures through specific composers and pieces of music. The Musical Links Investigation will be presented in the form of a media script. The various parts of the Musical Links Investigation will be turned in throughout the year in order to keep the students on track. IB Music Listening Paper aka: the IB Music Exam Students who choose to take the written IB Music exam will complete an essay test in May as part of the IB exam schedule. Components of that listening paper include a prescribed work, and world music cultural music, as well as examples from Western Art music.

IB Music HL Requirements External assessment 50% Listening paper (3 hours) 30% Seven musical perception questions Musical links investigation 20% A written media script of no more than 2,000 words, investigating the significant musical links between two (or more) pieces from distinct musical cultures Internal assessment (150 teaching hours) 50% This component is internally assessed by the teacher and externally moderated by the IB at the end of the course. Creating (75 hours) 25% Three pieces of coursework, with recordings and written work Solo performing (75 hours) 25% A recording selected from pieces presented during one or more public performance(s), 20 minutes
