R e s p e c t What it IS and how to show it in the classroom Adapted from Shmoop PBIS Respect curriculum ROAR Week Friday, February 17, 2017 Seminar Period R e s p e c t What it IS and how to show it in the classroom Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

Two kinds of respect: A feeling of admiration for someone or something that is good, valuable, important, etc.: HOW YOU FEEL A feeling that someone or something is important, serious, etc. and should be treated in an appropriate way: HOW YOU BEHAVE OR ACT Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

SO ???? We are not going to tell you who you should admire or have respect for. Those are your feelings and you are in charge of those. We ARE going to tell you who and what you should treat with respect no matter what, and what that respect looks like. Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

Respecting Yourself Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect What is self respect? Self-love, self-esteem, self acceptance “Treat yourself like your best friend” Be positive! https://youtu.be/AkgB4KHzJTc Always try your best! 3 tips on building self-esteem: https://youtu.be/zq-fSpFhNYw?t=54 Resiliency First video is 2:54 Amy Pohler talking about positivity Second video is about 2 minutes if you stop it by 2:55 Ownership Achievement Respect

Respecting Peers Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect What is respect for your classmates? Understand you don’t know everything about others or what they might be going through https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl2_knlv_xw Listen without interrupting and value their opinions, even if you don’t agree with them Be kind and assume good (or at least neutral) intentions Resiliency Video is 4:44 and shows what a variety of other people are thinking and going through in a hospital setting Ownership Achievement Respect

Respecting Adults Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect What is respect for adults? http://www.shmoop.com/video/pbis-respecting-adults/ The best way to get people to respect you is to treat them with respect Be courteous and considerate What do you think the point is of having authority figure adults in your life? Resiliency The video is from Shmoop and is 2:48 of semi-humorous look at how kids want to “fight the man”- with perspective that most adults are doing the best they can Ownership Achievement Respect

Respecting Differences What is respecting differences? Tolerance and understanding http://www.shmoop.com/video/pbis-respecting-differences/ Examine your own biases (things you might think about someone before you know him or her) Physical appearance, social class, gender, disability, race, sexual orientation, religion, what you might have heard about them… In a perfect world, how should someone who is different for any of these reasons be treated? Resiliency Video is from Shmoop 2:35 talks about respecting other cultures Ownership Achievement Respect

Respecting Property Resiliency Ownership Achievement http://www.shmoop.com/video/pbis-respecting-property/ The golden rule for property is to treat it as if it belonged to you and was somehow precious. Ask before you take or borrow property. Leave things in better (or at least as good) condition than you found them. If you break or lose something, apologize and replace it if possible! Resiliency Video is from Shmoop and is 2:41. Ownership Achievement
