Annecy Maths Week Last week each class celebrated maths week with the theme of fruit and vegetables

Reception - Ruby For Maths Week we: used money in our roleplay to buy fruit and vegetables. We weighed and compared heaviest and lightest. We counted, added and subtracted different fruit and vegetables.

Year One - Amethyst For Maths Week we looked at statistics and calculations. We covered: Pictograms Adding 3 or more numbers together Finding the difference between 2 numbers

Amethyst Class’ Surprise Our focus book last week was ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and the class was very surprised when they were invited to taste the delicious fruits from the story. Fortunately, there weren’t any cheeky animals around to take them from us!

Amethyst Class’ Challenge The children were challenged to find different ways of recording which fruit they liked and which fruits they didn’t. Year 1 are such clever thinkers that we had lots of different ideas!

… but which was the most popular fruit in Amethyst Class? Which is the least popular fruit? How many children liked bananas the most? Finding information from our pictogram Creating a pictogram How many children liked pineapple , mango and guava the most? How many more children liked oranges than avocados?

Number Sentences

Can you guess what we did with all the fruit at the end of Maths Week?

Year 3-Topaz For maths week we looked at measurements. We did Weight in grams and kilograms Length in cm, mm and metres

Investigations We first started by thinking in groups about questions we wanted to investigate about the fruit and vegetables using our knowledge of measuring. Our questions included: Which fruit or vegetable is the longest? Are any fruits or vegetables the same length? Which fruit or vegetable is the lightest or heaviest?

Estimating and measuring length We made sure we estimated the lengths/weights of the vegetables before we measured them using a ruler or scales.

Recording our results We recorded our results in tables and graphs.

We found out: The heaviest fruit or vegetable was the potato, the lightest was the grape. The longest fruit or vegetable was the cucumber and the shortest was the grape.

Year 4-Opals For maths week we looked at data handling. We linked our work to Science and art! We covered: Sorting and classifying Data collecting Presenting data Interpreting data Some fun pattern work!

Pattern Work! We started our week with a fun art activity! We used cross-sections of fruit as inspiration for printing work. We use polystyrene tiles to create our design, then we printed this using paint. We considered repeated patterns.

Sorting and Classifying We then discussed sorting and classifying. We worked as a class to sort fruits and vegetables creatively. We sorted them by considering… Shape Colour Ways it can be cooked Can it be held in a teaspoon? Popularity

Collecting and Presenting Data As a class we discussed data we could collect and present. We chose to find out What is the most popular fruit in Opal Class? We chose 5 fruits and collected the data using a tally chart. Then, we presented this data in a vertical bar chart. We considered questions that could be asked when interpreting the data… How many people voted for melon and strawberry altogether? How many people are in year 4 altogether? What was the most/least popular fruit?
