WA fatalities for different age groups, 2013 Road Crash Fatalities in WA, 1965-2012 The constant challenge as a community is to keep the road toll decreasing while population and vehicles increase each year. The road toll goes up and down (toggles) over the years but has steadily decreased since 1971 (40 years ago) when seat belts became mandatory. Decreases in road toll possibly attributed to other road safety initiatives eg RBT – but no research to prove this. What does work is a comprehensive approach – SAFE SYSTEM approach. Increases in road toll can be attributed to booms in economy and population – and unknown factors. A huge amount of research going on in this area. 2013 preliminary data = 89 metro fatalities + 73 regional fatalities = 162 total Current statistics: 12 deaths as at 17 February 2014; 352 estimated serious injuries as at 16 February 2014.

Novice driver crash risk BRAINSTORM Why are learner drivers safe? Answer: They have someone sitting beside them helping them make decisions. Why is the crash risk higher for the first 6 months on P plates? Answer: Combination of inexperience, overconfidence and risk taking contributes to a greater vulnerability during this time. EMPHASISE The first 6 months on P plates is the riskiest time. Young males more risk than young females (especially in rural areas). Young drivers are over-represented in crash statistics. Young drivers represent ~15% licensed drivers, but ~30% of road crashes. Extensive & varied driving practice is a proven protective factor Lower crash rate is about improved hazard management skills.
