Introduction This document will explain and demonstrate a recommended workflow for cataloguing separate bibliographic titles which are bound together in one physical volume. Note that there is more than one way to accomplish this task by using 77X fields in Alma. The workflow described here will use a 773.
Introduction The workflow described here will accomplish two very specific and useful tasks: Each title in Primo will display as a separate title. Each separate title within the bound volume will appear as available or unavailable depending on whether the volume is checked out.
Introduction In the case here the records are catalogued in a member institution and then shared with the network. The records are published to Primo from the network zone. We will see that when viewing the records in Primo from both the member institution and from the network zone it is possible to view the inventory of all related records.

Steps to bind the titles into one volume Decide which will be the "master title" This is the title which will get the holdings record and item On the bibliographic record(s) which is bound together with the “master title” add a 773 with subfield t containing the title of the “master title” Subfield w with the unique identifier of the “master title”. This might be the MMSID or the control number from the 035 field Wait for nightly linking job to run
Steps to bind the titles into one volume We have decided that the "master title" will be: Title: Readings from the Holy Scriptures System Cont. No.: (OCoLC)16385958 MMSID (in member institution): 992710350000121 MMSID (in network institution): 99152810900191 Therefore we will add a 773 to the record which is bound with the master title (from here on we will call this the “bound with” title) The 773 will appear as follows: 773 0_ |t Readings from the Holy Scriptures |w (OCoLC)16385958
Steps to bind the titles into one volume Here we put the title in subfield t and the system control number in subfield w. We could instead have put the MMSID in subfield w. If there was an ISBN or ISSN in the related records then we could have also added the ISBN in subfield z and the ISSN in subfield x
Steps to bind the titles into one volume The “bound with” record does not have a holding record”. Therefore if we do “view inventory” in the metadata editor from the “bound with” record we only see a holding record of the “master title”. It states “Holding of Related record”
Steps to bind the titles into one volume Here is the “master title” This is the indenter to which the “bound with” record points in 773 subfield w This is the title to which the “bound with” record points in 773 subfield t
Steps to bind the titles into one volume The master title has it’s own holding record
Steps to bind the titles into one volume The master title has an item connected to the holding record
Steps to bind the titles into one volume We then wait for the nightly job "MMS - Build Record Relations" to complete
