Freshwater Note taking guide

Set up the chart in your notebook CHARATERISTICS LAKES & PONDS WETLANDS RIVERS

Characteristics Temperature, sunlight, oxygen, and nutrients determine the organisms in an area Plankton-float near the surface (producers) Nekton-free-swimming organisms Benthos-bottom dwellers

Lakes & Ponds Photosynthesis takes place away from the shore Dead and decaying matter sink to benthic zone Eutrophication-as the amount of nutrients increases so does the amount of bacteria Oxygen decreases and organisms begin to die

Wetlands Marshes and swamps Filter pollution Reduce flooding and erosion Habitat and breeding area for many organisms

Rivers Changes with the land and climate as it flows Oxygen-rich and cold at its headwaters In danger due to industrial pollution

Jeff Corwin Video List the different aquatic ecosystems visited. List 3 biotic factors unique to this ecosystem List 2 abiotic factors List 1 adaptation an organism has in order to survive in this ecosystem
