PROBLEM SETTING Main problem Secondary problems How does the use of the English-Spanish cognates affect the English vocabulary in English Proficiency students at Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas – Espe. PROBLEM SETTING Secondary problems Is there any interference using Spanish cognates in Learning English? - Can the teacher control the interference created by false cognates? Could issues contribute to the lack of functional equivalence in both languages?

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION The research problem from this investigation is how adult learners use the cognates paying particular attention to the role played by presumed translation equivalents in the first language and second language lexical network, can successfully learn English vocabulary. Due the following facts: Students use translation as a tool to understand new vocabulary. Students do not assimilate similar English and Spanish words. Students want to know how cognates help them to acquire new English vocabulary. PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

OBJECTIVES General Objective To analyze the incidence of the use of English Cognates and Lexical Network in the English learning process for English Proficiency students at Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas in the supporting center 45 Otavalo”, from September 2011 to February 2012. Specific Objectives To know the cognates effect in the students. To recognize the typological cognates between English and Spanish. To understand how important cognates are in the learning process. OBJECTIVES

JUSTIFICATION It is focused on the knowing of vocabulary of students and how improve their knowledge of a Second Language, and also, looks helping teachers because the cognates can be used as a system to improve in their teaching methods of words of a Second Language, the English Cognates when we learn the meaning and the like with in this case the Spanish is more easy progress our vocabulary.

THEORICAL FRAMEWORK Cognates and Lexical Network Words with similar pronunciation,in some cases the same spelling and and meaning. False Cognates Part of the lexicon Psychotypology Used to know the difference between languages Lexical Network Words with similar spelling, pronunciation and different meaning.

Null Hypothesis The use of the English Cognates and lexical network will not improve the English learning process for English Proficiency students at Universidad de las Fuerzas Armdas – Espe on (Distance Program) at the supporting center 45 (Otavalo)”, from September 2011 to February 2012.

Summary of the results

Statistic Analysis Critical Value = 16.928 X2 = 87.57 Analisys and Interpretation: It is evident that the X2 : 87.57 is higher than critical value 16.928, it means that working hypothesis is accepted and the null is rejected.

Cognates offers oportunities when learn a foreing Language Students and teachers know about cognates. Do cognates easily remember words and meaning? CONCLUSIONS Cognates offers oportunities when learn a foreing Language

Cognates are a great vocabulary learning technique. If teacher use cogantes, students can improve their vocabulary. RECOMMENDATIONS The use of cognates in the students do easy assimilation between words.

PROPOSAL JUSTIFICATION: OBJECTIVE Produce that the teachers can take some references that can help to the full understanding about cognates and how important to remember vocabulary in the learning a second language. JUSTIFICATION: OBJECTIVE The use of cognates activate vocabulary in beginner learners situations. To use a cognates as a type of learning of a new language.
