5GCOM Report to Board#114 2017 review and 2017/2018 objectives Doc: ETSI/BOARD(17)114_017 Source: 5GCOM Agenda item: 9.3 For: Decision 5GCOM Report to Board#114 2017 review and 2017/2018 objectives Nick Sampson Board#114, 20-21 September 2017 © ETSI 2017. All rights reserved

ETSI BOARD STRATEGY 5G Communications Systems 2015-01-23 Targets 2017 Performance Define ETSI’s contribution to 5G standardisation – “what ETSI is doing on 5G” Maintain/update the slideset on “ETSI’s contribution to 5G” Identify opportunities for ETSI to collaborate with industry sectors and facilitate their engagement in 5G standardisation Promote ETSI’s role in 5G 2017 Current Status Year End Estimate Achievements Issues & Actions Slideset “ETSI’s contribution to 5G” regularly updated Three market sectors prioritised for consideration: Transport: discussion on possible follow to workshop in Nov 2016 Utilities: ETSI attended meeting with DG Energy; need to review next steps Factory automation ISG NGP Chair presented NGP activities to 5GCOM. Some steps agreed around increasing visibility and linking to research 5GCOM recommends the Board requests a presentation from ISG NGP, possibly at the time ISG NGP requests an extension Target Leader/Driver: N.N. © Ericsson AB 2015

Proposal for future activities - Continuation of ongoing activities Maintain the slideset on “ETSI’s contribution to 5G” and continue to promote ETSI’s role in 5G Quarterly review content with TB and ISG chairs Identify opportunities for ETSI to collaborate with industry sectors and facilitate their engagement in 5G standardisation Why: Meeting the needs of different industry sectors is a key aspect of 5G How: Prioritise industry sectors based on their current level of engagement, e.g.: Some are already directly contributing to 5G standardisation -> may be no need for further action Some are not connected to the 5G standardisation ecosystem -> ETSI may be able to help them get involved, e.g. support them in developing requirements to bring to ETSI/3GPP Take actions to facilitate engagement in 5G standardisation E.g. workshops, working with relevant associations/SDOs, requirements gathering Identify opportunities to promote ETSI role in 5G standardisation (speaking, workshops) Largely performed by the ETSI Secretariat ETSI/BOARD(17)114_017

Proposal for future activities – New activities Monitoring progress and completion of 5G standardisation in 3GPP, ETSI and other groups, and reacting if necessary Supporting LTS actions e.g. Long Term Technical Roadmap, Landscape existing activities, engagement with verticals/industry sectors Making recommendations to the Board for ETSI’s role in the ITU IMT-2020 process, and reporting on this role See next slides… ETSI/BOARD(17)114_017

ETSI’s role in the ITU IMT-2020 process (1/2) As part of the IMT-2020 process, the ITU has issued invitations: for submission of proposals for candidate radio interface technologies for the terrestrial components of the radio interface(s) for IMT-2020 The submission window is from October 2017 to mid-2019 to participate in their subsequent evaluation Registration as an evaluation group should be done before end 2017 3GPP is discussing its submission content and schedule It has been proposed to provide an overview of the 3GPP submission to the ITU-R WP5D workshop in October 2017, and make an initial submission to the ITU-R WP5D meeting in February 2018 TC DECT is considering the potential for a DECT-based IMT-2020 submission ETSI/BOARD(17)114_017

ETSI’s role in the ITU IMT-2020 process (2/2) ETSI needs to decide: Whether or not to register ETSI as an IMT-2020 Evaluation Group which Radio Interface(s) to submit to the ITU IMT 2020 process. These decisions are the prerogative of the GA For IMT-Advanced, the GA requested the Board to establish an ad-hoc group to address these make recommendations For IMT-2020, due to timing considerations, 5GCOM proposes 5GCOM addresses these matters and makes recommendations to the Board (for the Board to take to the GA) Consequently, 5GCOM recommends the Board asks 5GCOM to: Provide a recommendation to the Board on whether to register ETSI as an IMT-2020 Evaluation Group, and how such a group would function Such recommendation to be provided to Board#114a for approval to take to GA#70 (28-29 Nov 2017), to allow registration (if agreed by GA) before end 2017 Provide recommendations on which, if any, radio interfaces (in addition to those developed by 3GPP) ETSI should submit to the IMT-2020 evaluation process Such recommendations to be provided to allow GA decisions such that ITU-R submission timescales can be met ETSI/BOARD(17)114_017
