20th Hadron Synchrotron Incoherent effects section meeting February 10th, 2017

Information SLM Organisation of the ABP-LIU day: the date has been fixed to be the 22nd of February. Organisational matters are being sorted out. Summer students’ requests: Four requests from group (none from HSI) Yannis and Riccardo attended the BE workshop (7-9/02/2017) which took place at the Mövenpick hotel CERN-IHEP collaboration: Collect, by the 20th of February, proposals for studies to be carried out in 2018 ITUM addressing, among other things, afs phase out and LSF migration. Laurent attended the meeting BE website is online. Please give feedback and use BE-people forum

Information BEMB Green paper posts: Two for the ABP group, timeline still to be finalised. A flexibility post for PSB SC will be opened in first half of 2017 Bldg 864: the auditorium will be transformed into a laboratory space. Requests for funds for small projects should be prepared and sent to Paul by middle of February. Rende is going to step down from CSAP PS chairman, Ilias was proposed. LMC scientific secretary: Benoit should be replaced at some point. IEFC J. Coupard discussed the status of the EYETS activities. The Linac4 flood was reported in quite some detail. T. Eriksson discussed AD beam operation. ELENA commissioning is in 8-hour slots, 3 times per week during the year. SPSC report: UA9 long-term strategy has been requested, in particular the involvement and responsibility of CERN groups. ABP involvement to be clarified CO3 mandate was presented.

Information Chamonix 2017 Excellent work and presentations for Chamonix from HSI members (Fanouria, Dario, Nikos, Guido, Hannes, Alex, Gianni,…) Report from CMAC “Our congratulations to your achievements, which are phenomenal. It’s a great team that works enthusiastically on the job” LHC ATS has been recommended and selected as the optics for the 2017 LHC run. Further of the SB beam losses during the first 2-3 hours can significantly help the further optimization of reaching higher integrated luminosity Levelling studies should be pursued in 2017 Reevaluate allocated MD time in 2017 to align with the highest priorities given (Luminosity production & preparation for LS2). Injectors Address the existing intensity limitations for HL-LHC protons and ion, i.e. current limit in the PS and SPS (Q22 optics) and slip stacking of SPS HL-LHC Long range Beam-Beam compensation with wires is crucial. Flat beam performance is essential to understand to mitigate risk of crab cavity performance.

Information Newcomers Beam-beam and luminosity CLIC Andri arrived for working on the CC tests in the SPS. Angela arrived for working on SC for ions in the injector complex Beam-beam and luminosity Discussion for the luminosity modelling. Ilias will take over the follow-up of the following LHC run regarding emittance blow-up and luminosity Discussion organised by the LHC Physics coordinators for the Massi file production on the 6th of February Wire workshop on the 20th of March. CLIC Preparation of the CLIC workshop program Discussion with CIEMAT on the longitudinal gradient dipole for CLIC DR CLEAR proposal was approved

Information Space charge Malte reported about ongoing space charge studies with PyOrbit – discussions on matching of distribution to initial conditions, comparison of space charge modules (2.5D vs. slice-by-slice), calculation of beam emittances, … Issue with computing resources: IT reduced the number of available nodes on the space charge cluster from 20 to 11 (16 cores each) – contacting Giovanni for investigations with IT and possibilities to meet our medium and long term needs for computing resources for space charge calculations Short introduction to the DA tools like the DALIE interface for the NormalForm from MAD-X and PTC by Frank – another longer session will follow Preparation for LIU-ABP meeting ongoing (PSB: Frank, PS: Alex, SPS: Hannes) Analysis of MD data in preparation for Injector MD days New fellow Angela Saa Hernandez will work on ions (mainly SPS but also LEIR) – space charge and a bit of IBS

Next events CLIC workshop, CERN, 6-10/03 2017 EUCARD2 workshop on “Beam Dynamics meets Vacuum, Collimations, and Surfaces”, Karlsruhe, 8-10 March 2017 BBLR Compensation workshop, close to CERN, 20 or 21/03/2017 MD injector days, CERN, 23-24/03/2017 EUCARD2 Annual meeting, Glasgow, 28-30/03/2017 US-LARP HL-LHC meeting, Berkeley, 24-28/04/2017 IPAC 2017, Copenhagen, 14-19/05/2017 FCC week, Berlin, 29/05-02/06 2017 Impedance and Instabilities workshop, Benevento, 18-22/09/2017 Advanced Accelerator Physics CAS, RHUL, London, UK, 03-15/09/2017 Space-charge workshop, GSI Darmstadt, 04-06/10/2017 Beam-beam workshop, Berkeley, 27-29/09/2017 HL-LHC general meeting, Madrid, 13-17/11-2017
