EXPLORERS DON’T “MISS THE BOAT” ??ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS?? How did the explorers contribute to the development of Europe? What was the impact of exploration? You will be able to answer these questions after our lesson!

LET’S EXPLORE! Expedition gear you will need: A piece of notebook paper (folded into four sections) and the world map handout. The captain has given you two tasks to complete as you take your journey! You will use your world map handout to trace the routes of the explorers. Choose a color for each country and color in the key. On your paper, label each box with the names of England, France, Portugal, and Spain

CAPTAIN’S ORDERS! As you journey through the lesson, copy the explorer’s route onto your world map (match the color of the route with the explorer’s country). Record the information about each explorer onto your paper (include the name of the explorer).

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WHO: Italian who explored for Spain WHAT: Sailed to the West Indies Credited with discovering America WHEN: First voyage began in 1492, would go on a total of 4 voyages. WHERE: All of his voyages were to the Americas: Cuba, Central America, South America, Bahamas, and Hispaniola (today is Dominican Republic & Haiti) WHY: Was attempting to find a Northwest Passage to Asia

PRINCE HENRY THE NAVIGATOR WHO: Portuguese Prince who funded the explorations of Bortolomeu Dias, and Vasco da Gama (HE WAS A PATRON) WHAT: He sent Vasco Da Gama to explore the West Coast of Africa. He was trying to find a quicker route to Asia. Da Gama did reach Asia (India) WHEN: Dias 1487-1488, da Gama 1497-1498 WHERE: They sailed near Africa and South America WHY: Asia!!!! Wasn’t that where everyone was going??

WHY: No major discoveries but his attacks led to the defeat of the Spanish Armada. He stole lots of gold and jewels from the Spanish for England.

ON THE BACK OF YOUR PAPER -COPY THE FOLLOWING…YOU WILL SEE THIS INFORMATION AGAIN (WINK) Who looked for the Northwest Passage to Asia? Jacques Cartier, John Cabot, Samuel De Champlain WHY WERE THE EXPLORERS WHO ATTEMPTED TO FIND A NORTHERN TRADE ROUTE TO EUROPE UNSUCCESSFUL? They kept running into LAND!! EFFECTS OF EXPLORATION ON AFRICA, NORTH, AND SOUTH AMERICA. Slavery, spread of disease, wars, clash of cultures, imperialism, religious conversion, spread of new ideas, introduction of new foods and products.

WHEN IT WAS ALL DONE….. On the back of the route map you just completed, create a key using a number for each country (ex.1=Portugal, etc). Read the handout titled “The Empires of Portugal, Spain, England, and France” As you read the article, place a the number of the country in the area they claim (ex. Dias reached the southern tip of Africa, place a ”1” in South Africa). Click on the caravel for the next part of your expedition.

EMPIRE MAP ANALYSIS Answer the following questions on your paper . Which continents had more than one country claiming it for their empire? What may occur when more than one nation claims an area (a complete sentence)? What advantage would a nation have if they alone claim an area (a complete sentence)? Now you are ready to report back to the king….answer the questions from the beginning of the lesson on your paper. Click on the caravel for the next part of your expedition.
