How to Charter a K-Kids or Builder’s Club Region Training Conference 2016 Name, Position

First off: What are they? They are the youngest branches of the Kiwanis Family and are a part of Service Leadership Programs. K-Kids: The largest international community service organization for elementary school students. Builder’s Club: The largest international community service organization for middle school students. Why is support important?

Why consider chartering? Build Kiwanis influence in the community Increase membership retention between Kiwanis branches Provide leadership opportunities to a younger crowd Improve communication with sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs Be an example for aspiring students Why is support important?

Chartering Process Bring Up the Idea Communicate with the home Key Club and the sponsoring Kiwanis Club Understand the responsibilities that it entitles i.e. Advising/Funding the club, lending support Find an advisor for the new SLP club 2. Communicating with Possible Site Inform and Educate on what the Kiwanis Family is and what are some benefits Gather support from the school faculty and staff Scout out a prospective faculty advisor Why is support important?

3. Find Members! 4. Organizing the club Advertise the club Get people on campus interested in joining Leave a great first impression of the club Be sure to give off an inclusive feeling while being informative Inform the parents List positive impacts that joining have Ask the school in support for promoting the club 4. Organizing the club Aim to maintain a steady membership Elect and train the Chartering officers Create and provide bylaws for the club Why is support important?

5. Filling Out Chartering Paperwork Four required documents to submit 1: Petition to Charter 2: Agreement to Sponsor from Kiwanis Club Signed by Kiwanis Club President and Kiwanis Advisor 3: Agreement to Sponsor from School Signed by School Principal and Faculty Advisor 4: Copy of Bylaws An attachment recognizing Key Club co-sponsorship must be included Chartering Paperwork can be found on the Kiwanis International Website Decide how to fill out/who takes responsibility of the Chartering paperwork with the Kiwanis Club

6. Planning Long-Term As the co-sponsor, help ensure that the club survives and grows Visit the club Shows support and gives the members and opportunity to meet members from across the Kiwanis Family Ask the Key Club general membership to meet the sponsored club membership Maintain a healthy and constant relationship with the school and faculty

Responsibilities Meet with Board Members and Faculty Advisor Show constant support for the club Help plan events, service projects, etc. Find ways to increase attendance Be considerate that members are young

Considerations Realize that the club may have limitations Funds, time, variety in events etc. Work your way around them Ask Faculty Advisor for help Include Key Club membership in assistance

Co-Sponsorship If there is an existing K-Kids or Builder’s Club, ask sponsoring Kiwanis for the possibility of co-sponsorship Co-sponsorship is NOT necessary to become involved with the club

Helpful Tips Setting goals for the sponsored club Setting goals for the sponsoring Key Club Plan out visitations at the club Teach them about other branches of the Kiwanis Family Host interclub events Create a pen-pal system with Key Club Be sure to host reasonable socials/banquets Recognize outstanding club members Why is support important?
