« Buffer Zones » : scope CERN’s Radiation Areas divided in perimeters; At least one Buffer Zone per perimeter; Buffer Zones located near to the exit point(s) of equipement Objectives: Facilitate the respect of the rules: dedicated space for simple and autonomous traceability; Rise efficiency: decoupled processes in simple steps: Provide a dedicated space for RP measurement with low background; Dedicated for temporary storage (48h) and small equipment only (typical surface 10-12m²). Present status (summary) Most of the Radiation Areas perimeters already equipped with suitable Buffer Zones; Already 43 Buffer Zones: 38 existing Buffer Zones (BZ); 2 BZ under construction (BA80, ISOLDE); 3 BZ which need to be modified (see slides 15-16); 4 new TREC computers needed (slides 12); In total 4 new Buffer Zones needed before LS2: 2 BZ + computer (slide 13-14); 2 BZ only, already existing computers (slides 14); 2 BZ needed for PS/SPS experimental areas during physics (slides 18). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

Traceability for (E)YETS & LS2 TREC is becoming one of the major InforEAM module >> ressources may be needed (EN-ACE); Computers are essential: special configuration, guarantee the traceability by anyone in the field; Computers and Buffer Zones need to be maintained (computers renewal, cleaning, floor renovation, etc.). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee

Conclusion Most of the Radiation Areas at CERN are already equipped with Buffer Zones; Only few additional Buffer Zones (4) and computers (6) needed for LS2; New! HSE-RP is going to equip the Buffer Zones with gamma radiation monitors (GRAMS); (E)YETS & LS2: HSE-RP performs regularly the inventory. RP takes already care that material is removed from buffer zones but sometimes the owner does not react. As RP in such a case cannot decide if material should become waste or not we need the endorsement of LSC to classify it as waste after a waiting time of 30 days. Before the EYETS, responsibilities and budget need to be clarified between HSE-RP, EN-ACE and BE-ASR (TREC / Computers / Buffer Zones). 30-Sep-16 LS2 committee
