Scope and Keys MAC connection identifier Reduction of duplicate information Hierarchical architecture: Two step Separation of user-related and service-related parts Small MAC PDU header for VoIP service Minimize MAC PDU overhead with service-related connection identifier within a user.

Motivations Flat connection identifier in legacy system CID with user-related and service-related information User-related information is duplicated if a MAP indicates the user information 2-byte CID in 6-byte Fixed MAC header PDU header overhead for small-size SDU 23-byte SDU with ROHC for G.729A voice source 6-byte PDU header + 4-byte CRC (optional)

MAP and CID Modulation-based resource allocation CID in MAC PDU has the information of user and service User-based resource allocation DL/UL resource allocation with basic CID CID in MAC PDU has the duplicate information of user. HARQ is applicable.

Hierarchical Identification Separation of user-related and service related parts. User identification for resource allocation User MAC ID is unique within a cell Service identification with a user for PDU User SID (Service ID) is unique within a user

MAC PDU with Small Overhead New MAC PDU header with User SID Use User SID ≤ 1 byte instead of 2-byte CID Remove HCS Reduce and rearrange redundant fields Small MAC overhead for VoIP SDU MAC PDU header ≤ 3 bytes 10% overhead reduction for VoIP SDU

SDD Texts 11.X Upper MAC Concepts 11.x.1 MAC Addressing MAC identification has an hierarchical structure which consists of user-related and service-related parts. For the user-related part, User MAC Identifier (ID)s identify users in a cell uniquely. The User MAC ID is utilized at resource allocation in control channel or MAP. User Service Identifier (SID)s discriminates connections within user as the service-related part. The User SID is in new MAC PDU header to identify a connection within user. The MAC PDU results in low overhead. The set of ID sizes is FFS. The ID size is configurable by cell broadcast information.
