1 Samuel 20:14-17; 2 Samuel 4:4; 9:1-13; 16:1-4; 19:24-30; 21:7 Honoring a Promise 1 Samuel 20:14-17; 2 Samuel 4:4; 9:1-13; 16:1-4; 19:24-30; 21:7
The promise. Jonathan pledged to support David. David pledged steadfast love to Jonathan’s family.
Keeping the promise in good times. David sought to honor Jonathan. They found Mephibosheth. David reassured him. David blessed him.
Keeping the promise in hard times. David had fled the city. Ziba reported Mephibosheth’s treason. Mephibosheth claimed his loyalty. Gibeon wanted justice. David kept his promise.
What does that mean to me? Weekly memory verse: 2 Samuel 21:7 “But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Saul's son Jonathan, because of the oath of the LORD that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.”
My word is my bond. I need to make pledges carefully. I am characterized by my word.
I must keep my word in the good times. I must eagerly seek to keep my promises. I must be humble in keeping my promises. I must be focused upon others.
I must keep my word in the hard times. I must show grace and mercy in keeping my promises. I must be wise and faithful in keeping my promises. I must be focused upon others.
