Fungus Because Fungi are organisms, they must RESPOND TO STIMULI. Fungi mostly deal with external stimuli. The main five that they encounter are: Temperature Light Touch Water Gravity

Plants Because Plants are organisms, they must also RESPOND TO STIMULI. Plants encounter the same main five external stimuli. Again, they are: Temperature Light Touch Water Gravity

In response to the external stimuli: Responses In response to the external stimuli: Fungus: Grow towards light PHOTOTROPISM Grow away from gravity GRAVITROPISM (or geotropism) Plants: Grow towards light PHOTOTROPISM Grow away from gravity GRAVITROPISM (or geotropism) Grow towards water HYDROTROPISM Grow or move when touched THIGMOTROPISM Note: In the early stages, fungi grow away from gravity, but as they mature, they may grow towards it. Note: The tropisms don’t apply to the whole plant, but to plant parts (the stems, leaves, roots and occasional flower.)

Do Fungi Have Roots?

Note: A large group of hyphae is called mycellium! Nope! Hyphae: Long fibrous strands that look like roots, and do the jobs of roots, but they ARE NOT ROOTS! Allow the fungi to absorb nutrients and water from the dirt around it. Hyphae growth is extremely impacted by stimuli. They almost always grow towards food, water, or reproductive units of other fungi. Note: A large group of hyphae is called mycellium!
