What is an abbreviation? An abbreviation is a shorter way of writing something. Some examples Dr. doctor St. street Mr. Mister Rd. road Mrs. Misses Ave. avenue Capt. Captain T.V. television Lt. Lieutenant Mon. Monday

When writing an abbreviation… Remember abbreviations begin with a capital letter Abbreviations end with a period Usually abbreviations are 2, 3 or 4 letters

When writing someone’s name and title… Capitalize the persons first and last name. Capitalize the title (Dr. Mr. Mrs. Capt. or Lt.) Write a period after the abbreviation.

Let’s try one… I like to visit my friend on Berry Street. another way of writing it is I like to visit my friend on Berry St. St. is the abbreviation for street

Another example… Mister King hurt his knee while playing on Tuesday, June 4. another way to write it is Mr. King hurt his knee while playing on Tues., June 4. Mr. is the abbreviation for mister and Tues. is the abbreviation for Tuesday.
