History of Gymnastics The Chinese *Developed activities that resembled gymnastics The Greeks (Worked with an apparatus) *Early Greeks originated the word gymnastics, which means “naked art”. *Another Greek originated word, Gymnasium, which means the ground or place for gymnastic performances. Johann Basedow (1723-90) *First European who taught organized gymnastics. Fredrick Ludwig Jahn invents the parallel bars, horizontal bar, pommel horse, and the vaulting horse.

German immigration (1850) brings gymnastic clubs to the U.S. called Turner Societies. In 1865, American Turners establish a Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union for training gymnastic teachers.
