2-2 Writing and Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides 9/18/17

Essential Question: Why do some equations have the same variable on both sides?

Like Terms This is important because Like terms have the same variable(s) with the same exponent. like-terms: NOT like-terms: This is important because you cannot add or subtract terms unless they are like-terms!!

Steps: Combine any like terms on each side of the equation. Use inverse operation to move one variable term to one side of the equation (easier to move the smaller term). Use inverse operation to move constants to the other side of the equation. Solve for variable. 4n – 6 = 3n + 2 + 1

2x + 6 = -3x + 1

6a + 14 = -7 – a

Example 1 (spiral) What is the value of x when the expression 6x-9 equals the expression 4x+3?

Example 2 (spiral) What is the value of x when the expression 3x+6 equals the expression -15 +6x?
