Genetic diversity of Rangifer tarandus from Chukotka and Taimyr (polymorphism of the mtDNA control region) M.V. Kholodova, L. A. Kolpashikov, V.M. Etylin, V.N. Nuvano V.A., A.A. Baranova, M.V. Kuznetsova A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology&Evolution RAS, Moscow, Russia The Extreme North Agricultural Research Institute of Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences”, Noril’sk, Russia Chukotka branch of North-Eastern Complex Research Institute of Far Eastern Branch of RAS, Anadyr’, Russia. Chukotka We described haplotypes of the mtDNA control region (HV1) (418-470 bp) of Reindeer from Taimyr (all wild) and from Chukotka (wild and domestic). High level of genetic diversity was found in Taimyr population. Genetic differences between the Central (CT) and both Eastern (ET) and Western (WT) groups of Taimyr Reindeer were low, distance between ET and WT groups was greater (4-5 times). Pattern of Mismatch distribution reflects that population of Taimyr wild reindeer for a long time maintains high level of population numbers. Genetic diversity of wild Reindeer in Chukotka was nearly twice higher than of domestic deer. Genetic diversity of Wrangel population was similar to the diversity of mainland domestic deer, in spite of its formation from the low number of founders and 50-years isolation. In Taimyr and Chukotka populations we found some common haplotypes (for 418 bp fragment), and in both populations there were haplotypes identical or very close to the haplotypes of reindeer from Yakutia (our and GeneBank data). Additional samples from these and other parts of reindeer range in Russia are need to be analyzed in order to get the complete picture of phylogeography and genetic diversity of this species.
