Presentation transcript:

Setting Goals

Jim Carrey and His Goal One night in 1987, when the 25-year-old Jim Carrey was a struggling Canadian comic trying to make his name in Los Angeles, he drove his old Toyota up to Mulholland Drive in the Hollywood hills. Sitting there and dreaming of the future, Carrey wrote himself a check for $10 million. He dated it Thanksgiving 1995 and added the notation, "for acting services rendered." By the time 1995 actually rolled around, his rambunctious goofball roles in "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "The Mask" and "Dumb & Dumber" had yielded worldwide grosses of $550 million, and superstar's asking price was up to $20 million per picture. But by that time, Carrey no longer had the check anyway -- in July 1994, he had slipped it into his father's pocket as he lay in his coffin. November 24 95 Jim Carrey 10,000,000 Ten Million Dollars ----------------------------- Jim Carrey

No Map? Have you ever had to drive somewhere but you didn’t have directions or a map? Did it take longer? Were you frustrated? Did you ever get there?

How are goals like a map?

The Power of Setting Goals In 1953, the graduating seniors at Yale University were asked, “How many of you have a clear, specific set of goals, with a written plan for achievement?” Less than 3% did! Twenty years later the graduates were interviewed again. The 3% who had written goals appeared to be happier. The 3% of people who had written goals were worth more financially than the other 97% combined!

Effective Goals are S.M.A.R.T. Specific Measureable Attainable Relevant Time-bound Examples: By the end of my senior year, I will have a 3.9 G.P.A. By the time I turn 25, I will own a 2,000 square foot home in Merced. By September 30, 2016, I will be enrolled at UCLA.

Possible Lifetime Goals Career Financial Education Family Physical Leisure Public service ?

Make These Goals SMART: Specific Measureable Attainable Relevant Time-bound Make These Goals SMART: I will have a lot of money in the future. I will walk on the moon next year. I will be a famous movie star someday. I will have friends. I might go to college.
