Dyad Read 1 page on Socratic Seminar Socratic Seminar Reservoir Room Just to start…then summarize on own for time Possible if time-stand up and review the 6.Record the 6 key components into the graphic frame.

Vocabulary Preview of the Text Pre-reading strategy Cognitive Pernicious Propensities Hedge Funds Incarcerating Pragmatism Important to preview a couple of vocabulary…can be very short, but important-write it up on board-no one is looking in a dictionary. They can just listen and it can be up on the whiteboard and leave it up there while they read Pharmaceutical is a word that kids might know once they hear it, but won’t know how to decode it…

Seminar Prep: Group Reading of the Text Read aloud and model “think aloud” Turn and talk about this section of the text Write down a short phrase to summarize this section of the text on your Read Aloud Notes After the first 3, read on your own and write down what you think is the most significant line from the text Mention that there are many silent reading strategies to use too, but we are modeling an oral reading strategy – the important thing is to USE a strategy and not just assume the kids can read it.

Socratic Seminar Review the 6 key principals with a partner Outer Circle Job-track the conversation OR pick one of the 6 important principals on the graphic organizer of seminar and make notes about where you see them being used or not being used When the inner circle introduces themselves and reads their most significant line, record names on the back of your packet in a list or circle Rally Robin the 6 key principals with a partner Explain what out circle and inner circle will do Head into the computer lab that is set up. Start with open ended question on the white board

Inner Circle Say your name and read your most significant line Opening question: What are the implications of Edward Glaeser’s article for how we teach boys and girls in our classroom?

Seminar Debrief SIM Frame Open up the discussion so people can ask questions and share their ideas
