Charles I/V Surrounding France: Origins of a War

Under the Rule of Charles Red- Aragon Purple- Castile Burnt Orange- Burgundian possessions Yellowish- Austrian Lands Tanish/Brownish/ Whatever- Holy Roman Empire

Charles V War with France A series of four major conflicts between 1521 and 1546 - Francis I vs. Charles I/V Fight over land in Italy - Milan - Savoy - Venice Another war from 1551-1559

War with France Henry VIII switched sides (wonder why?) France eventually allied with the Ottomans - Ottomans will keep fighting Hapsburgs till 1571 - Why would they get involved?

Schmalkaldic League Alliance Lutheran princes against the Catholic Emperor Charles V - Mutual defense agreement - Did not attack Charles - Eventually intended to replace HRE - 10,000 infantry, 2,000 cavalry Helped spread Lutheranism Confiscated Church land Kicked out Church leaders

Schmalkaldic War Serious conflict with Charles did not begin until 1546 (why then?) Schmalkaldic league had a bigger army but worse leadership - What are some of the problems you could foresee because of their structure? War lasted till 1547 - Schmalkaldic League lost

Schmalkaldic War Many leaders fled Catholicism became the official religion again (Augsburg Interim) Protestantism could not be eliminated, though Protestants won battle in 1552 - Charles V agreed to the Peace of Passau In 1555 he negotiated the Peace of Augsburg

Document Analysis: Read the Peace of Augsburg and summarize the main idea of the agreement

The Peace of Augsburg All political units (duchies, princedoms, city states, etc.) can choose between Lutheran or Catholic - no other religions allowed All Catholic Bishops and other Church leaders abandon resources in Protestant lands Cannot infringe upon the religious choice of another state

30 Years War

French Wars of Religion Three main groups fighting and undermining the King - Catholic League (Spain and Rome) - House of Guise (Henry of Guise) - Huguenots (England) - Houser of Bourbon (Henry of Navarre) - Malcontents (King's younger brother)
