Abraham Lincoln becomes president Lincoln was chosen as the Republican candidate for the 1860 election for several reasons Lincoln thought slavery was terrible and wanted to end so he wrote the Emancipation proclamation. he was not even on the ballot in nine states in the South, and won only 2 of 996 counties in the other Southern states. Lincoln had a majority vote in all but two of the states in which he won the electoral votes and would still have won the electoral college and the election.

Early Life He served as a captain in a company of the Illinois militia drawn from New Salem during the Black Hawk War. He later tried and failed at several small-time business ventures he taught himself the law, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1837. he made his first protest against slavery in the Illinois House, stating that the institution was "founded on both injustice and bad policy."
