Trout Fishing Lodge

One of the most scenic properties in the Mpumalanga Highveld nestled within valleys with rock formations, plains and mountains. Situated 250 km from Olivier Tambo Airport.

The buildings are currently well occupied with the business showing a profit and the farm paying for itself. The lodge has an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area, with large fireplace in the lounge, five bedrooms, two with en-suite bathrooms and two further bathrooms. An entertaining area upstairs includes a bar, pool table and darts board. A fully covered veranda, with a braai area offers the opportunity for outdoor entertaining in any weather.

Chalet 1 has two bedrooms and a loft, with two bathrooms Chalet 1 has two bedrooms and a loft, with two bathrooms. It has an open plan kitchen/dining and lounge area with a fireplace in the lounge, looking out onto a covered veranda that overlooks one of the farm’s dams. There is also a braai area. Chalet 2 has two bedrooms and a loft, with two bathrooms. It has an open plan kitchen/dining and lounge area with a fireplace in the lounge, looking out onto a covered veranda that overlooks one of the farm’s dams. It also has a braai area. Chalet 3 is a cosy 1 bedroom en-suite cottage with open plan kitchen/dining and lounge area with a fireplace. There is also a covered veranda with a braai area on the cottage.

The Farmstead The Farmstead is the original homestead of the farm which has recently been renovated. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, an open plan kitchen/dining area overlooks a covered back veranda. The lounge has a fireplace opening up onto a large covered veranda with a braai area that overlooks the old orchard and the valleys and hills beyond.

Water on the farm Two large dams are stocked with trout and endless kilometres of rivers and weirs produce good fishing opportunities. Four springs are found on the property. Each of these feed their own streams which eventually join up with each other and flow into the river at the southern end of the farm. Three waterfalls are present on the farm. The first pool, is up along the stream that feeds into the southern end of a dam. The second waterfall, can be found past a dam on the way to the river, and the third waterfall, flows into the river. There are two man-made dams on the property, and one weir: Each of the dams has created wetlands at their inlets and outlets, providing good bird watching opportunities.

Wildlife A number of mammals have been seen on the farm. Oribi, steenbok, duiker, grey rhebok and fallow deer are common on the farm. The farm is home to 5 species of bat. Dassies can be seen in large numbers at the river and occasionally at a dam Serval, black-backed jackal, side striped jackal, caracal, brown hyena, otter, aardwolf and leopard are the predators that frequent the farm. Porcupine, bushpig, warthog and civet are the other large mammals found on the farm. Fallow deer, side striped jackals and duikers are often seen in front of the Lodge at night under the pear trees in early summer.

Of particular note though are the following: • A Bald Ibis colony at the waterfall below the second dam. • A Black Eagle can be seen periodically along the river. • A pair of Blue Cranes visits the farm annually between August and January. • There is a breeding pair of Cape Eagle Owls on the property and are sometimes seen in front of the Lodge at night. • Gurney’s Sugarbird can be seen in the Protea savanna toward the end of summer. Four snake species are commonly seen on the farm: The variegated bush snake is most often seen in the larger trees along the streams. Puff adders and Rinkhals have been seen on several occasions on the farm, and the harmless green water snakes are often seen swimming across the dams.

Location The farm is situated in the North-eastern Mountain Grassland veld type. It is considered to be a true grassland, and is dominated by grasses and grass-like plants. A large number of wild flowers are present, and add particular beauty to the farm between October and February. Unique to the farm is the large stand of Protea trees that can be seen from the road down to the river.
