Ear Notching
Introduction Why do we use animal identification? Keep current health records Ex: diseases, immunizations, medications, etc. Most common form of animal identification for swine (also used for sheep and cattle).
Objectives Explain the importance of identification of swine. Illustrate ear notching procedure on a worksheet.
Helpful Tips: Be careful not to put ear notches too close together! Skin may weaken and could tear or break off! At least a ¼ inch in between each notch. When notching older pigs, house them in separate pens.
When piglets around 1 to 3 days old. Use a sharp knife or “V” notchers. Make sure all tools are sterilized!!!

Guidelines Two notches are allowed in each quadrant, except for the ear tips. Minimum of 1 notch in each ear. Maximum of 9 notches in each ear. Maximum Litter Number = 161 Maximum Pig Number = 26
Now it’s your turn… There are two containers labeled litter number and pig number. Each of you will draw 1 number from each container. Demonstrate the ear notches on the board in front of class.
