The Sherwood High School Counseling Center Interests & Self Discovery Personality Type/ Career Interest Assessment Sophomore Career Lesson Hand out packet Remind Students to do the Pre-Assessment & Collect Students may log in to computer, and go to the Sherwood Web-site Presented by The Sherwood High School Counseling Center

Today’s Objectives By the end of this lesson students will be able to connect their interests to a potential college or career pathway. Students will: Define interests and why interests are important. Utilize the Family Connections Program. Complete a Personality Type Assessment Connect interests with career choices and school course selections Investigate possible career interest areas as they begin to think of next steps after high school. Overall explain Objectives… also posted on the board. “This is what we will be doing today…”

Interests What are my interests? Interests are things you like to do, spend time doing and that arouse your curiosity. Often they are things you do just for fun. Examples- writing, taking photos, collecting sports cards, reading and shopping. Define interests to the class… (read slide) The next slide gives you opportunity to ask the class questions

Interests Questions to think about What are my interests? “What do I enjoy and what am I good at?” How do my interests connect with the classes I take or the courses I register for next year? “Hmm… I really like science. Maybe I’ll take a class in Astronomy next year.” What careers will make good use of my skills and interests? “I love science, I might think about becoming a chemist or doctor.” Ask questions to the class… Examples: “Does any one have an interest that they would like to share with the class?” “How can you connect your interest with a class that we offer at Sherwood?” “Knowing your interest, can anyone share a possible career that they my be interested in pursuing?”

Don’t wait until your senior year to begin the process. Start Thinking Today… It’s important to begin thinking about your next steps in life…Think about your next path NOW… Don’t wait until your senior year to begin the process. Make the connection!!!! Learning what you like will help you find a career you enjoy! …Or will conversely help you decide on a career you will not want to pursue Example: I Like science  take class in wildlife bio  don’t enjoy class = pursue science not related to biology We will meet with you again in the spring to help you select classes that support your interests and future goals
