Atoms vs. Ions An atom is neutral. But an ion is a charged particle. It will have a different number of electrons.

What is a chemical formula?

Determining Chemical Formula (Ionic) When determining chemical formulae of ionic compounds the charges on the ions need to balance out. Ions are charged, but ionic compounds are neutral. Li?F? Li+ ion (group 1) F- ion (group 7) (+1) + (-1) = 0 Li1F1 = LiF
