Magna Carta 1215 Principles Magna Carta is often thought of as the corner-stone of liberty and the chief defense against arbitrary and unjust rule in England

Magna Carta 1215 Principles Magna Carta established for the first time a very significant constitutional principle: the power of the king could be limited by a written document

Magna Carta 1215 Principles For the first time in history, a ruler placed himself under the rule of law.(Roman?) The Magna Carta was one of the forerunners of the U.S. Constitution and its first 10 amendments

Magna Carta 1215 Principles It further expanded the rights and liberties of the people and limited the power of the government. Most important were the vaguely worded statements against oppression of all subjects, which later generations interpreted as guarantees of trial by jury and of habeas corpus.

Magna Carta 1215 Principles It became a symbol of the supremacy of the constitution over the king The Magna Carta was of special importance because; The people came together and successfully forced the king to publicly accept their demands

Magna Carta 1215 Principles The foundation of democracy in England was laid by the Magna Carta, which put restrictions on the absolute power of the King.

Magna Carta 1215 Principles When British settlers came to America in the 1600's, they brought this idea with them. They also brought provisions from the Magna Carta like majority rule and the rights to due process of law, a speedy trial and trial by jury.

Magna Carta 1215 Principles When the colonists sat down to draft a constitution, they turned to the Magna Carta.
